We caught up with the band backstage to find out about their pre-gig rituals (which involve having their asses slapped) before discussing Slayer, Minor Threat and NOFX. Includes some awesome flame-filled onstage footage too.

00:00Well, with the jet lag on this tour, it's been different because, you know, I'm really concerned about my voice.
00:06I think right off the bat is very telling of how the show is going to be for me.
00:13And a lot of times, like for instance tonight, I've come down with something really bad in my throat.
00:19And I've been sick.
00:20And so for tonight, I was warming up and warming up and it just wasn't feeling right, wasn't feeling right.
00:25And I need to make sure I go out there and don't hurt myself and have to cancel more dates.
00:28So tonight, it was all about staying calm and not worrying about how much the kids were giving me,
00:34but just staying calm in my own mind to make sure I don't overpush it.
00:37But on a normal night, you know, I listen for how loud the crowd gets when the lights go out.
00:43And like stuff like that, you can really tell how crazy these kids are.
00:47If they're chanting Avenged before anything happens, that's always cool.
00:51You just know they're about to go apeshit, you know.
00:53Yeah. So there's like little things and I like, you know, we all like the normal thing.
00:58Like our roadie Jason is our best friend comes up and gives us all slaps in the ass, you know.
01:02We all grew up playing sports and that's what you do.
01:04And so for us, that's like normal for us and it pumps us up.
01:07And if we don't get it, we call them on the radio and say, we're not going on until Jason
01:11comes up.
01:11We have to postpone the stage until we get our ass slaps.
01:14Yeah. So we just do all these things that, you know, and I walk out, I always spit water at
01:18the same spot.
01:19I always give everyone in our crew that's standing there like fist pumps and just get everyone pumped up.
01:24And then we go out there and do it.
01:26And it's just like very, you know, meticulous in what we do every night.
01:30And if it's different, it really throws us off.
01:32Yeah. I definitely feed off the crowd every night, you know.
01:34If the crowd is not as rambunctious one night, you know, I'm kind of just kind of feeling it out
01:41and trying to get them back into it.
01:43But usually if they're going off, then I'm having a blast and I'm going off on stage as hard as
01:48I can.
01:49Yeah. And our fan base is unlike any other fan base.
01:53They're just, they're crazy, you know.
01:55Like they're, I saw so many people here tonight with like sleeping bags and stuff.
01:59And it's like they are just very passionate about it.
02:01They've been through a lot with us, with losing Jimmy.
02:05And, you know, and we always, we always serve the fans first.
02:10The only thing we don't serve them with is what kind of record we're going to write.
02:14We always write the record that we want to write.
02:16And I think they like that.
02:17Our fans have kind of been weeded out to where our fans expect something different every time and something, you
02:23know, that we're into and exciting.
02:25And a lot of times they follow us through records.
02:27You know, through and through we're a rock band and a metal band.
02:30And we're very happy with, with being that thing that your parents just don't know who we are.
02:37And a lot of people in the street don't know who we are, but we can go sell out arenas.
02:41And we're very cool with that because we think that keeps, we feel that that keeps the kids thinking it's
02:48cool or our fans think it's cool.
02:49Like I love wearing Slayer shirts because, you know, or Pantera stuff because every metalhead knows what that is and
02:55every rock fan knows what that is.
02:56But your parents aren't going to listen to it.
02:59And that's one thing that with our band is we're, we've never been like reaching for things that we aren't.
03:04And so when we're number one on the billboard, it kind of gives everyone in the music industry like, what
03:09the hell is this?
03:10Like, what is this?
03:11Like, I'm, you know, Avenged.
03:13I knew they were on Warner Brothers.
03:14I knew they were this.
03:15But, you know, how are they doing this without a single that's not even a crossover single?
03:20It can't even be an alternative rock.
03:21It's on active rock only and it's too heavy for alternative, it's too heavy for top 40, but it goes
03:27number one.
03:27And it was just a testament to our fans that they're like, you know, we want to be there for
03:33you guys and we want to buy your record instead of just downloading it, which I'm sure millions of them
03:38downloaded it as well.
03:40Our ethics when we were brought up is punk rock.
03:43We grew up on Warped Tour and Minor Threat and Black Flag and No Effects and Bad Religion.
03:47So if you throw us in a club, we're going to have just as good of a time as doing
03:51something like this or bigger.
03:53So that's what I love about our band is we can go out there and just, you know, just wing
03:57it and just do it.
03:58Or we can do this.
03:59And that's what's fun about it.
04:01So the UK, I don't know what you're going to get next, but it'll be cool.
04:05It'll be fun.
