00:08So we're at Terminal Studios in the London Bridge area and we've been here for most of this month and
00:14a bit of December, just preparing for going on tour and learning how to play the songs that we've spent
00:20a year writing, ready to leave this room quite soon and play in different rooms.
00:34The real work for this record started kind of at the beginning of last year, maybe like March, April. We
00:42were on tour in Australia in January and then we had a little bit of a break when we got
00:48home and then started getting songs together and then started recording.
00:54We were doing the bulk of the main recording in maybe like April or May. We did it at Lanark
01:00Studios which is owned by Felix and Al and it's at the end of Brick Lane.
01:06And they've got a nice big space there where we've got all our synthesizers, everything set up, drum kit, guitars,
01:14lots of different effects, units and all this good stuff.
01:17So that's where we made a lot of the album.
01:26With this record, we did demo quite a lot of the songs at our respective homes and then bring them
01:34to the studio.
01:35So we kind of started the songs in the same way we might have done before, but by having a
01:40good stretch of time ahead of us and having a big studio to work in,
01:44but a studio that we were quite familiar with and an engineer that we were basically just friends with, who
01:50we were very comfortable working with,
01:52and it meant that we could kind of take our time over this record and not feel the pressure of
01:58being in a kind of professional studio for the first time.
02:02It was more like a natural progression out of the places we'd recorded before into a studio environment.
02:09We could achieve things relatively quickly that maybe we wouldn't have been able to do before.
02:14Like when we had the idea to get different drummers to play on the record and to get a steel
02:19pan player in,
02:20we kind of had space to do that and the kind of opportunity to do that in a sort of
02:27proper way, I suppose,
02:28rather than not really knowing how to mic up these things and do it sat on a bed somewhere.
02:34So it felt a little bit easier in that respect.
02:42We tried to, with this record, record a whole like takes of an instrument that played through the entire track,
02:50so we wouldn't just like play a little bit of a verse and then loop it.
02:54You know, we wanted the performance of each instrument to be good and to feel like natural and like a
03:01live performance.
03:02So, you know, we'd really make an effort to like record the bass guitar through the whole song or whatever.
03:08That's a pretty standard and pretty boring thing probably, but it's new to us.
