00:04You don't know how lucky you are that the Authority hasn't found you yet.
00:10If the Authority catches you and you don't have anything they need, you'll be dead.
00:16Rage is a first-person shooter foremost, but it's definitely got an adventure kind of exploration aspect.
00:22It's not an RPG, but it's got that flavor and that feeling,
00:26and it's just much more in-depth than you'll ever get out of a normal first-person shooter.
00:30You know, you can kind of involve your mind in more than just your trigger finger.
00:45The bad guys in the world, you know, we have everything.
00:48There's some bandits around the corner. Do what you can.
00:51The bandits are considered to be more of the violent settlers that aren't really economically inclined,
00:57but they have desires and needs.
01:00Each bandit clan has a unique fighting style.
01:03It's ever-changing. For instance, the Ghost Clan.
01:06Hey, over there!
01:07They're very acrobatic. They can attack you from above or below.
01:11The Wasted Clan.
01:13What they lack in combat skills, they definitely make up for in personality.
01:16You're dead in time!
01:17The Shrouded Clan, they've designed these remote-control bomb cards that they use against you.
01:24We felt that with human-type opponents,
01:27if you add personality to the fighting skills and add personality to the characters,
01:31it really makes the world more refreshing.
01:34We're losing this!
01:35But if you fight that enemy for 12 hours, I don't care how cool he was in hour one,
01:40it's not going to be so cool in hour twelve.
01:42So it's about mixing it up for the player.
01:45Not reinventing the rules, but give him something a little different around every corner,
01:48so that's what we strive to do.
01:54The Wasteland has a number of mutants.
01:58So there's a bit of a mystery to where the mutants came from.
02:03Some people believe that the cosmic radiation and the impact winner affected human development.
02:09But some people believe that the Authority were conducting experiments on humans,
02:14and the failures were, of course, the mutants.
02:20Then, of course, there's the Authority.
02:24You don't really get to understand or know what they're about until later in the game,
02:28and they've kind of twisted this new reality to be what it is
02:32that the player will eventually find out as he gets to the end of the game.
02:37These guys are battle-hardened military badasses.
02:41They have full body armor.
02:43They can coordinate with other squads.
02:44They have heavy weapons.
02:45When you go from fighting mutants with sticks to bandits with pistols
02:49to facing off against the Authority, it's a different experience.
02:54These guys are tough, and they mean business.
03:03It is famous for having incredible graphics, so I wanted to have this real combat feel to it.
03:10Remember, to be of use to us, you must be able to move around freely.
03:14We decided to kind of make animations using motion capture.
03:17In RAID, we have upwards of 6,000 animations that have been created.
03:22One type of character may have 300, 400, 500 animations that go with them.
03:26By applying those animations, the character is starting to look a lot more interesting.
03:31You also look interesting.
03:33When you're actually in combat with an AI, they have multiple layers themselves.
03:38When you shoot at the enemy, they'll actually react to the shot.
03:43So they'll freak out, and they get into this scramble mode, where he's running around trying
03:47to save his life, and then dive into the cover.
03:50And this is not really scripted, it's just based on what you've done to the enemy,
03:55which will change the AI state, and then they will play these different state of animations.
04:00And you can interact with them at the time they're doing that,
04:02so it's not like they're just stuck in that particular animation.
04:06You can shoot them and kill them, and everything happens as you would expect.
04:09And all these things work seamlessly together to really make our AI stand out
04:13and feel like they're part of the world in a way that you haven't seen a first-person shooter before.
04:17Well, enough with all that.
04:21When a player's interacting in a combat scenario, the important thing to do is give them choices.
04:26And there should never be a dead point when they're only thinking,
04:29oh, I'm just holding the trigger down to kill these guys.
04:33Unpredictability and the element of surprise makes a great enemy.
04:37It's when you enter a room, you think you know the situation,
04:42and the AI does something that you don't expect.
04:45Because I don't want them thinking of it as AI.
04:46I want them to think, wow, that's the best combat experience I ever had.
04:53Show me what you can do, and get the hell out of here.
04:56I want you to think, wow!
05:00That's the best combat experience I ever had.
05:00I know, that's one big one!
05:01I know.
05:02I know.
05:06I know.
05:07I know.
05:07I know.
05:07you
