00:16Hey, we're Foles and we're in the basement of our house where we wrote a lot of the record.
00:22We live here and we work here and it's an all-encompassing environment of noise and
00:29we live here with some other musicians as well, having a band called Jonquil and we called
00:38it the House of Supreme Mathematics, sort of as a joke that became serious and fine.
00:44We moved into this house in February 2009 but stuff had been written before and we just
00:51worked out a lot.
00:54We wrote some bits on tour, most of it is loop-based so originally it would just be little guitar
01:02loops that me and Jimmy did either on the road or when we moved in here we started working
01:08on them.
01:09I think the main difference between this record and the last one was that we weren't obviously
01:14playing in the new material live and we worked in different formations so me and Jimmy would
01:21work and then Edwin would come down sometimes and then Walter, it was more of a more Tetris
01:29than now before.
01:30It wasn't all of us at the same time.
01:33No, I don't know.
01:34There isn't songwriting in the conventional way of a guy with an acoustic guitar fighting
01:38down chord sequences.
01:40I spent a lot more time working on the vocals and the lyrics because we could come down here
01:47and play at night for example and play quieter and sort of I could sing, you know before we
01:53were always playing on parties or shows and it was generally just having to scream.
01:59A lot of the last album was written in an arena about half this size, with everyone deliberately
02:04trying to destroy everyone else's hero.
02:07So things have really moved on.
02:09I tried to, I feel like there's less masks and less sort of, yeah, fewer masks.
02:19It's less evasive.
02:22I wanted for it to be, I mean in terms of the actual singing it's just because I, you know,
02:27it was just quieter so I could sing or try to sing.
02:33And lyrically I wanted there to be lyrics that were more direct in their meaning or if
02:39they weren't that they would be more easily capable of instilling meaning and, you know,
02:47more disciplined lyric writing.
02:49Because I think before I was easy on myself in terms of, like I'd have an image or something
02:56and then it was more of a treasure hunt and it would be like, I wouldn't feel the need to
03:01explain it,
03:02only feel the need to, for it to sort of cross between me and to the listener.
03:10Whereas I hope that the lyrics on this record, I think they're just more, they're more set,
03:18like each song is set more within one parameter.
03:21And it explores that scene with less sort of brain threading.
03:28There are themes, there's like, you know, heroism, ancestry, the future, heartbreak, drugs,
03:42and Mike Tyson.
