00:05Well, I've always been a fan of U2, and I've got to say, the only fucking one in my circle
00:14of friends in my entire life, I've fought their fucking corner. Everybody else, not
00:20doesn't get it, fucking hates them. But I love them. And I love the Joshua Tree, I even
00:27like Rattle and Hum, you know, for all its faults, but I do love it. But I queued up outside
00:32Al Price Records in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, the day it came out, and I bought
00:39it on cassette. And I thought it was great then, and I still think, they've never really
00:46looked back from that album. It's like when you start to read the stories about them, they
00:56dismantled everything and they went to Berlin because of David Bowie and Iggy Pop and Lou
01:00Reid and all this, and they'd been listening to fucking stereo MCs and Happy Mondays. And
01:06they'd reinvented their sound. It was really inspiring. And I remember that NME went and
01:12tracked them down on tour, didn't they, and kind of hopped on the plane and went on that
01:17Zoo TV tour. And I seen them on that tour, and they came to Manchester to do a benefit
01:22gig to try and get Sellafield nuclear power station calls down. And the bill was, that
01:28day, and this is no word of a lie, Public Enemy, Craftwork and U2, the greatest gig of all time.
01:37And they used to do Satellite of Love by Lou Reed, and Lou Reed used to do it on a
01:42screen
01:43like he was coming in live by a satellite. But this night, he was actually in Manchester,
01:48and he came and walked down this catwalk and sang it. And everyone on the stand is going,
01:54fucking Lou Reed, is it? Right, what hotel is he staying at? We've got to go and fucking see him.
01:59And that Zoo TV tour, I remember there was a DVD come out and a documentary, and I used to
02:05watch it
02:06constantly. And I was roadieing at the time, on the spiral carpets, and they used to take the piss.
02:11Fucking U2. And I was like, this is the fucking future, man. It blew me away, that gig. The
02:16TVs and, you know, the DJ used to come down in those little cars to rock and roll by Led
02:24Zeppelin.
