UK Fuel Theft Surges Nearly £200,000 a Day Since Iran War

Drivers have stolen an average of nearly £200,000 worth of fuel from UK petrol pumps every day since the Iran oil crisis began, according to Forecourt Eye. Incidents of fuel taken without payment rose 20% in the five months after the conflict started on February 28, compared with the prior five months. Over the same period, the value of stolen fuel rose 48% to an estimated daily average of £194,000 across the UK's 8,359 petrol pumps.
BBC and Reuters report that the war disrupted oil supplies and raised wholesale prices, pushing up pump costs. Daily incidents rose to around 2,872 on average across UK forecourts, up from around 2,400, and the volume of stolen fuel rose 24% to 108,900 litres a day.
The average price of petrol hit 160p per litre, about 27p more than before the conflict and a three-and-a-half year high. Diesel rose to 179p, about 37p higher.
First-time offenders saw a 23% increase in incidents and a 26% rise in the volume of fuel stolen. That compares with 17% and 20% for repeat offenders.
