00:05One day, you may look up at the moon and see something truly extraordinary.
00:10Reddish glows, flickers of light, or even sudden bright flashes.
00:13You might not believe they're real, but these lights behind me are.
00:17And astronomers now think they know what's causing these light displays,
00:21dubbed transient lunar phenomena.
00:26And if you're lucky enough to see a sudden flash of light,
00:29then you've just witnessed the after-effect of a meteorite that's heavier than an average apple
00:34crashing into the moon's surface.
00:37The energy of that impact creates enough heat in the moon's rocks
00:41that they glow and emit a spark of light.
00:47These lunar impact flashes were first confirmed in 1999,
00:51but hundreds have been spotted since.
00:53But some moonlights can last minutes, which is actually quite a lot of time.
00:58These are probably caused by radon gas coming up from inside the moon when there are moonquakes.
01:07When radon decays, it emits light because it's radioactive.
01:10And this light is what we can see from Earth.
01:13So tonight, have a peek up at the moon to see if you can spot these cosmic light shows.
