00:07to know about the 2026 full buck moon before it leaps into the summer sky at sunset on July 29th.

00:13July's full moon occurs as the lunar disk shines opposite the sun in Earth's sky,
00:17making it appear fully lit from our earthly perspective.
00:20It's also known as the buck moon because it rises at the time of year when male deer,
00:24also known as bucks, grow their antlers anew.
00:27Because who doesn't like a wardrobe change every now and again?
00:30Sadly you won't see the moon growing horns when it rises over the southeastern horizon on July 29th,
00:35but you may see it adopt a striking yellow orange hue in the hour following moonrise as an effect
00:40called Riley scattering filters out the blue wavelengths of its light as it passes through
00:44the densest region of Earth's atmosphere close to the horizon.
00:47It's a perfect night to grab your telescope or binoculars and search for ejector rays brightening
00:52the dark lunar seas, where devastating asteroid impacts once excavated fresh
00:57material from beneath the lunar surface before casting it far across the ancient landscape.
01:02July also happens to be the 57th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing,
