Transcript
00:00This weekend, you'll be able to see a full moon that is also a blue moon that is also
00:05a mini moon.
00:06A full blue mini moon.
00:08So what does that mean?
00:09On May 31st, we will have a full moon, but this is actually the second full moon in May.
00:15The first full moon happened on May 1st.
00:17When a single month has two full moons, we actually call the second of those full moons
00:22a blue moon.
00:24Sadly, the moon will not actually look blue.
00:27The name blue moon was actually coined by amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruitt in 1946
00:33in an article in Sky and Telescope.
00:35So it's a blue full moon, but it's also mini.
00:40When a full moon or a new moon happens at the same time that the moon is at apogee, or
00:45its furthest point from Earth, we call it a mini moon, or a micromoon.
00:51The moon won't look completely miniature in the sky, but it'll be a little bit smaller,
00:55roughly between 6 and 7 percent smaller than the average full moon.
01:00Sky watchers often like to take advantage of nights like this, as a smaller full moon means
01:05that its presence in the night sky won't obscure the rest of the sky quite as much as
01:10another full moon might.
01:11So, there you have it.
01:13Set a calendar reminder and don't forget to look up this weekend.
01:16Set a calendar reminder and don't forget touem the Environment to Narcan接 this weekend.
01:17It's great.
