01:20It begins in the dust.
01:30To understand his story, you need to understand his world.
01:36Arabia sat between two giant empires.
01:40Byzantine to the north, Persian to the east.
01:43Both looked at the desert and saw nothing worth taking.
01:47The desert was ruled by tribes, hundreds of them, each with its own code, its own enemies,
01:55its own blood feuds.
01:57War was not a last resort.
02:00War was a way of life.
02:02At the center of it all stood the city of Makkah.
02:06At the center of Makkah stood the Kaaba.
02:09A house built, tradition says, by the prophet Ibrahim for the one God.
02:14By the 6th century, that house held 360 idols.
02:20The Quraysh tribe controlled it, and they had turned faith into prophet.
02:25They were the merchants, the elite, the powerful.
02:29Into this world of idols and inequality, a boy named Muhammad was born.
02:35Before he could walk, his father was already dead.
02:39He arrived in the world, already carrying loss.
02:52As was custom, the infant Muhammad was sent to the desert.
02:57A Bedouin woman named Halima nursed him.
03:00She said blessings followed him from that day.
03:04Her dry camel gave milk.
03:06Her flock grew.
03:09At six, he returned to his mother.
03:12Weeks later, she died.
03:16An orphan.
03:18At six years old.
03:21His grandfather took him in.
03:25Two years later, his grandfather died, too.
03:32His uncle, Abu Talib, raised him next.
03:35A kind man, but a poor one.
03:39Young Muhammad grew up on the margins of Meccan life, watching, thinking, noticing everything.
03:49And people noticed something about him, too.
03:53He never lied.
03:56He never lied.
