00:00You were told you need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
00:03But did you know your ancestors would think your sleep schedule is completely unanswered?
00:07For most of human history, people didn't sleep in one long block.
00:10They practiced biphasic sleep.
00:12They went to bed shortly after sunset, slept for about four hours, called the first sleep,
00:16and then woke up around midnight.
00:17For an hour or two, the whole house was away.
00:20They used this time to read by candlelight, pray, socialize with family, or make more
00:23ancestors.
00:24After that, they went back to bed for their second sleep until dawn.
00:27So what ruined it?
00:28The industrial revolution in artificial light, street lamps, and light bulbs pushed bad times
00:32later, and strict factory schedule forced us to cram all our rest into one solid block.
