00:00Well, the election of the Nanyoemba Association has come and gone.
00:05I think there are two key lessons to take away.
00:08One is the election itself.
00:10There are complaints about people who are disenfranchised,
00:15who felt that they wanted to vote,
00:17but somehow the electronic system did not allow them to complete the process of voting,
00:22so they are naturally not very happy about that.
00:26So the next election, people are looking forward to it.
00:28If they are going to criticise government for not conducting a free and fair and credible election,
00:35then you, as a body of lawyers, must be prepared to conduct free, credible and fair election.
00:42The second aspect, of course, is now that they have a new government,
00:46Nigerians expect that they will correct a lot of things that are wrong with the legal profession,
00:52starting from the bar to the bench.
00:54So lawyers must guard, they must walk against the very bad perceptions
01:02that people have about the legal profession,
01:05people have about lawyers being responsible for many of the political,
01:10social-economic problems of Nigeria.
01:13I think lawyers are definitely not responsible,
01:16for what they can do in a large to work,
01:19and they remove that perception.
