00:03Brighton Rock is a Canadian hard rock band from Niagara Falls, Canada, formed in 1982.
00:10The band was mostly successful in its home country and released three albums during its heyday.
00:15Founded by guitarist Greg Frazier and bassist Stevie Screebs, along with vocalist Jerry McGee,
00:22keyboardist Martin Victor, and drummer Mark Caverzon, the band's initial name was Heart
00:27Attack. However, before the release of their debut EP, they changed the name to Brighton Rock.
00:33In 1986, they released their debut album, Young, Wild and Free, which was produced by Michael
00:41Wagener. By this time, Martin Victor had left to join a band called Bucks and had been replaced
00:47on keyboards by Johnny Rogers. Young, Wild and Free spawned the Canadian hit singles,
00:53We Came to Rock and Can't Wait for the Night. The album peaked at number 82 in Canada and was
00:59certified gold in 1989. In 1988, Brighton Rock released their second album, Take a Deep Breath,
01:06their most commercially successful album. It peaked at number 22 with hits like One More Try
01:12and Hangin' High and Dry, and the band toured outside of Canada for the first time. In the early 90s,
01:18the band radically changed its sound. They fired keyboardist Johnny Rogers and shifted to sleaze
01:24metal and glam metal, genres that were enjoying their final moments of glory in the US at the time.
01:30In 1991, Brighton Rock released the album Love Machine. The album didn't chart, but the single
01:36Hollywood Shuffle reached no. Six on the CanCon, the band toured Ontario to promote the album,
01:42then broke up. Their final show was at the Spectrum Nightclub in Toronto in June 1992. As Fraser explained,
01:51they were suffering from a combination of burnout due to an exhausting touring schedule and frustration
01:56at not being able to break into the US market. Brighton Rock reunited in 2001 and 2008, but they
02:03never released another album. The band performed at festivals such as the Monsters of Rock Cruise and
02:09the Fyre Fest Festival. The band's final chapter came on August 25, 2020, when frontman Jerry McGee died of cancer.
