'Merci les pompiers': Children thank fire crews as France wildfire weakens

Firefighters resting at a school in a southwestern French town ravaged by wildfires received a hero's welcome from children on Friday (July 31) who wanted to thank crews for fighting flames and protecting the area. At a school in Sainte-Helene, children made drawings of firefighters reading "Merci" - "Thank you" in French - and gave them to firefighters taking some down time from battling a massive wildfire that has devastated 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres) of land in the Gironde department. Thousands of people evacuated in southwestern France due to a major wildfire were gradually allowed back home on Friday after authorities said the fire, which has burned for more than a week, was contained. French authorities have ended the evacuation of 12 districts in the west and southwest of Bordeaux, allowing 144,000 people back to their homes.
