A conversation with Prof. P. J. Cherian—Founding Director of the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR), Director of the Pattanam Excavations, interdisciplinary researcher, and Managing Trustee & Director of PAMA—on how the Pattanam excavations have transformed our understanding of ancient Kerala.
Drawing on archaeological evidence, he discusses the life, culture, belief systems, and long-distance maritime trade of communities that lived in Kerala between 300 BCE and 300 CE. The conversation explores the significance of Amana (Śramaṇa) traditions, Pattanam's extensive trade network stretching from the Mediterranean to South China, and what scientific archaeology reveals about the people of ancient Kerala.
The interview also highlights the remarkable contributions of three women archaeologists - Dr. Roberta Tomber , Dr. Giulia Rocco, University of Rome, Italy and Dr. Marianne Bergmann, German Institute of Archaeology ( whose work has deepened our understanding of our past) and examines what archaeological evidence tells us about the languages spoken in ancient Kerala.
A thought-provoking conversation on archaeology, history, science, and the making of Kerala's early civilization.
