Dr. Art Ulene climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and celebrated his birthday at the summit.
Transcript
00:04This nonagenarian just climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. He reached the summit on
00:09his 90th birthday. Dr. Art Yulin is a retired OBGYN and a former Today Show
00:16medical correspondent. This was his first successful attempt to reach Africa's
00:20highest peak. It took 15 days for Yulin to reach the summit at 19,341 feet above
00:29sea level. He climbed alongside a 22 person support team who affectionately
00:34called him Babu, Swahili for grandfather. He did the climb to inspire other older
00:39adults to, as Yulin puts it, live up to their potential not their age. So how did
00:45he pull off an achievement like this? Here are three longevity rules he lives by.
00:50Yulin didn't start exercising seriously until 50. Now he's in the gym four times
00:55a week. He trained for the climb by walking 50 flights of stairs in his
00:59hiking boots. Yulin pushes back on the idea that getting older means slowing down.
01:05To him, growing older is a chance to keep growing, not a reason to stop. Every member
01:10of his support team on the mountain was decades younger than him. By the end of
01:14the climb, Yulin considered them family. To read more about Yulin's incredible
01:21journey, head to Business Insider. Going home!
