00:01The CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter has faithfully served the Marine Corps for more than half a century.
00:07It's what people think of when Marine Corps aviation is mentioned in any conversation.
00:14The aircraft made its debut in 1964 as a commercial aircraft.
00:19However, its mission was converted to assault support, cargo, and search and rescue roles during the Vietnam War.
00:26By 1968, the Sea Knight had flown 75,000 hours on 180,000 missions, including more than 8,000 missions
00:36rescuing wounded Marines.
00:38It has served in Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
00:44We've organized helicopters for four years now, and they've been in the Marine Corps for quite some time, over 50
00:49years of service.
00:50The day that they have to go away, it's going to be a sad one.
00:52In 2015, the Sea Knight helicopter was retired by the last existing squadrons in favor of the MV-22 Osprey.
01:02The future of warfare is evolving, the battlefield is evolving, and the new aircraft is designed to kind of fulfill
01:08the role that we see in the future.
01:11Even though the CH-46 is being phased out, it will be remembered fondly by those who flew it.
