00:08Hungarian prosecutors
00:09raided data servers linked to Viktor Orbán's
00:11Fidesz party as part of a
00:13corruption investigation.
00:15The party is accused of misusing
00:17public cultural grants to support
00:19its election campaign.
00:21The raids triggered a wave of reactions
00:22from former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán,
00:25Fidesz figures and the party's allies.
00:27Orbán described the investigation
00:29as politically motivated.
00:31His former political director told us
00:33the raid was an attempt to put pressure on
00:35the political party. But prosecutors
00:37said they seized the servers because
00:39the volume of data combined with a lack
00:41of cooperation made it impossible
00:43to back it up on site.
00:45French National Rally MP Marine Le Pen and
00:47Italian Minister Matteo Salvini voiced
00:49their support for Fidesz, claiming that the
00:51seizure of the party's communication systems
00:53and databases amounted to a
00:55in violation of the rule of law.
00:57But experts we spoke to found no
00:59evidence that this was the case.
01:01I don't see any additional
01:02or heightened danger to rule of law
01:07and safeguard of human rights.
01:09I think that these processes
01:11currently are in conformity
01:13with the Hungarian legal provisions,
01:16are in conformity with European
01:18human rights standards.
01:20All of the guarantees are available.
01:23All of the possible judicial options are opened.
01:27Political analysts told us that Fidesz's
01:29claims that the investigation represented
01:31a breach of the rule of law,
01:32followed a familiar political pattern.
01:34They stressed that the investigation
01:36should also be viewed in the context
01:38of Hungary's changing political landscape.
01:41In May, Petr Mowgiel was sworn in
01:43as Prime Minister and soon launched
01:45Operation Purgatory, an initiative
01:46to dismantle what he calls
01:48the Mafia State established under Orbán.
