I always thought the awakening of those creepy sci-fi robots would happen in the distant future. But when I looked at Unitree's new AS2-W hybrid robot, I felt like I was staring at a battle droid straight out of the Star Wars universe. It hits 21 km/h on flat ground with its wheels, but the second it sees an obstacle, its legs take over to jump over 25-centimeter steps or even do backflips. It travels 30 kilometers on a single charge and makes autonomous, split-second decisions using its LiDAR sensors.
They claim it's strictly for search and rescue, but I honestly think we are looking at the next generation of battlefield hardware. Because remember, the future is not fiction, it is being coded right here.
