00:06Red carpet, warm handshake, talk of an unbreakable alliance.
00:11This week, that script may not hold.
00:13Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Washington for his seventh meeting with President Trump
00:18since Trump returned to power more visits than any other world leader, by the way.
00:23But this time, he arrives with the relationship visibly strained
00:27and without even a scheduled photo opportunity.
00:33Rewind to February of 2026, when the two leaders last met,
00:38they laid the groundwork for a joint military campaign against Iran,
00:41a campaign both men eagerly promoted at that time.
00:45But that campaign didn't go the way either side had expected.
00:49The stated goal was toppling the Iranian regime.
00:53Months later, what remains is an uneasy, deadly stalemate.
00:57And that gap between expectation and reality has visibly frayed the relationship.
01:03Trump was reportedly convinced going in that war that would be short and contained.
01:08Instead, his frustration has spilled into what's been described as
01:12expletive-filled private conversations directed squarely at the man once seen
01:17at his closest international ally.
01:22The attention isn't just background noise anymore.
01:25It's surfacing in public.
01:27Just before this visit, Trump was asked on Fox News about reports that Netanyahu planned
01:32to share fresh intelligence on Iran's nuclear rebuild.
01:35His response was pointed.
01:37Essentially, that he doesn't need Netanyahu telling him things Netanyahu benefits from Trump believing.
01:43There's also been friction over Lebanon.
01:46As Israel continued operations against Hezbollah,
01:49Trump reportedly warned Netanyahu on a call in early June
01:53that the campaign was damaging how both Israel and, by extension,
01:58the U.S. were perceived internationally.
02:00Israel did eventually reach a trilateral agreement with Lebanon about a month ago,
02:06but it's still refusing full withdrawal from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah disarms.
02:15So why meet now if things are this tense?
02:18The honest answer?
02:20Opportunity, not warmth.
02:22Netanyahu had reportedly been pushing for weeks to secure a White House invitation,
02:27even according to a U.S. official,
02:30through media leaks meant to pressure a meeting into existence.
02:33Trump, for his part, had been resistant.
02:36It was the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham this week that finally created the occasion,
02:42even if the Netanyahu meeting is technically secondary to that event.
02:49Three issues sit at the center of this meeting.
02:52One, Iran.
02:53Netanyahu wants to present intelligence,
02:55suggesting Tehran is rebuilding its nuclear and military capacity
02:58and wants to warn Trump against further diplomatic concessions.
03:02But Israeli officials themselves reportedly assess that Trump has little appetite
03:07to restart a full-scale fight,
03:10at least not before America's own elections in November.
03:14Two, a potential F-35 stealth fighter jet sail to Turkey.
03:19Israel is worried this could erode its long-standing military edge in the region.
03:24Trump's message on this has been blunt.
03:26Arms sales decisions are his to make,
03:29and he is called Turkey a tremendous ally,
03:33regardless of Israeli objections.
03:35Three, a possible U.S.-Saudi civil nuclear agreement.
03:39Israel fears this could trigger a wider regional nuclear race.
03:42Trump has tied progress on that Saudi deal
03:45to expanding the Abraham Accords and normalization with Israel,
03:49though Riyadh hasn't confirmed any such linkage publicly.
03:53Here's what makes this more than a diplomatic story.
03:56It's an election story.
03:58Netanyahu faces Israeli national elections in October,
04:02and current polling reportedly puts him well short of a majority.
04:06Trump has long been one of his most valuable political assets.
04:09Being seen as influential in Washington matters enormously for Netanyahu right now,
04:14which is likely part of why he wants a long-term U.S.-Israel defense pact finalized
04:20to replace the expiring Obama-era memorandum
04:23and possibly progress towards Saudi normalization he can showcase back home.
04:28Trump, meanwhile, is well aware of this leverage.
04:31He has shown selective support,
04:33for instance, recently indicating Netanyahu wouldn't face arrest on U.S. soil
04:38despite calls from some American political figures for exactly that.
04:43So here's the trucks.
04:45What does this meeting actually tell us?
04:47Netanyahu calls the friction tactical.
04:50Nothing more than disagreements between two close allies.
04:53But the optics say otherwise.
04:55No cameras this time,
04:57a meeting that had to be engineered around a funeral,
05:00and a U.S. president who's gone from calling him more or less a partner in war
05:05to privately calling him crazy and difficult.
05:09Whether this meeting steadies the relationship
05:11or simply papers over the cracks before Israel's election season
05:15is the question worth watching in the weeks ahead.
