Appearance: Aka manto is an urban legend related to toilets, particularly those in elementary schools. This phenomenon is known throughout Japan, with numerous variations on the same theme. It usually occurs in a specific stall of a specific school toilet. Typically, it's an older or less frequently used toilet, often a stall with an old Turkish toilet. Often, the fourth stall is cursed, as the number four is associated with death. Most stories follow this general pattern: late at night at school, a student suddenly finds themselves desperately needing to use the toilet. The nearest toilet is one that students usually avoid; it's older and poorly maintained, separated from the rest of the school, and rumored to be haunted. But, with no time to look for another toilet, the student enters. They relieve themselves and, when finished, look for toilet paper, only to discover there is none. Then, they hear a strange voice: “Do you want red paper? Or blue paper?” The student replies, “Red paper,” and an instant later is stabbed and cut with such violence that blood splatters everywhere, soaking his body and making it seem as if he is wearing a bright red cape. Some time later, another student finds himself needing to use the bathroom in a similar situation. He knows of the rumors that a student died in that bathroom, but he has no choice and uses the bathroom anyway. And, in fact, a voice asks, “Red paper or blue paper?” Remembering the legend, this student says, “Blue paper.” Then, all the student's blood is sucked from his body, leaving him dead with a bluish face on the floor. There are several variations of this legend, each with slight differences. The true identity of Aka Manto is one of them. Sometimes it is said to be a person hiding in the next stall—a serial killer in many stories. Other times, it is a ghost that appears as a tall man with a sickly, bluish-white face. In some places, the blame even falls on a hairy yōkai called kainade, who lives in the bathroom and likes to caress people's buttocks with his hand. In the case of kainade, the end result is considerably less violent: a hairy arm of the chosen color emerges from the toilet bowl to caress the student's behind.
