How Nissan's GEN4 car inspires future road car performance

Nissan Formula E Team is accelerating into the most powerful era of electric racing yet, as development of the all-new Formula E GEN4 race car advances ahead of Season 13 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.  The fourth-generation Formula E car introduces significant advances in electric performance, all-wheel-drive capability and sustainability. For Nissan, the arrival of GEN4 represents more than a new racing platform, it provides new opportunities to accelerate the development of electrified technologies that can benefit future Nissan consumer models through the company's long-standing "track to road" and "road to track" engineering philosophy.  Development of Nissan's GEN4 challenger model is already underway at the team's engineering headquarters in Viry-Châtillon, France. Reigning Formula E World Champion Oliver Rowland remains closely involved as development continues.

00:03It's an enormous amount of power that feels like you're literally leaving your

00:08physical body behind and and pushing forward it's it's quite unbelievable to

00:13drive. The sport has evolved impressively in 12 years. It started from being a

00:19start-up, an experiment, to one of the seven FIA World Championships.

00:27Almost a different category to what it was at the beginning, you know, the power

00:31output, the quality of drivers, teams, the technology involved in the race cars as

00:37well, everything has just gone through the roof. The jump of performance between

00:42Gen3 and Gen4 is really, really massive and with Gen4 we feel like we are landing on

00:47something which is, let's say, maybe not optimum still but very close.

00:52The traction is coming from the full time overdrive and also for the higher

00:57torque from the electrical motor. This gives you a very high acceleration that's

01:04significantly different from the other categories so that will give you more

01:08excitement in the race. Gen4 is another animal, as we say. The level of

01:14performance will be much higher. From the technological standpoint I think what is

01:20really interesting is to have an all-wheel drive car, permanently all-wheel drive. I think

01:25people will be surprised how we will beat a lot of records in terms of performance.

01:31It's absolutely a cycle and what is really important to understand is that the technology

01:36is the same. So the way the inverter, the gearbox and the motor of the electric power train work is

01:44exactly the same technology as road cars. There is a huge opportunity with Gen4 where cars become

01:50all-wheel drive to transfer the strong expertise of Nissan on all-wheel drive and of course all this then

01:57will go back to our core business. We're able to supply Nissan with the software relevant software

02:04that can then be placed into the production line and make Nissan cars of tomorrow more efficient

02:11and more reliable. With Gen4 will be a new start and we will have to be ready for that.
