The Portent of My End is a slow, atmospheric doom metal meditation on mortality, the silence of the grave, and the question every generation must eventually face.
A lone traveler walks through a winter cemetery, contemplating "... that undiscovered country from where no traveler returns." The song follows his descent—from observing the graves, to confronting his own mortality, to standing before a door that no living person can open.
Yet beneath the darkness lies a greater truth.
The refrain asks, "If only the dead could speak..." Scripture answers that question in the account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31). Even if someone were to return from the dead, those unwilling to hear God's Word would still refuse to believe. The greatest miracle has already happened: Jesus Christ conquered death, and His resurrection is God's final answer to the grave.
Death is certain.
Judgment is certain.
But so is the hope found in Christ.
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me..." — Psalm 23:4
If this song causes you to pause and consider eternity, then it has accomplished its purpose.
