00:04Night vision sounds like a superpower.
00:08For many animals, it is survival.
00:10Cats see well in dim light because their eyes gather available light efficiently
00:15and use a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum which makes their eyes shine in headlights.
00:21Owls combine huge eyes with silent flight and sharp hearing,
00:26turning darkness into hunting cover.
00:29Tarsiers have enormous eyes fixed in their skulls so they rotate their heads to track prey.
00:35Geckos can see color in extremely low light.
00:38Deep-sea fish use oversized eyes, sensitive retinas, or bioluminescent signals where sunlight is gone.
00:46Crocodiles, raccoons, foxes, deer, and many nocturnal mammals also rely on eye shine and low light sensitivity.
