00:20The blueprint always was to have a very strong band instrumentally and also a very strong vocal
00:31approach.
00:32It wasn't rock, it wasn't heavy, it could be very light and very musical at times, just
00:37due to the fact of how everybody played.
00:39We were very different people.
00:44If we can find a better guitar player, we'll get one, and we did.
00:48Musical differences, awesome.
00:51Oh my God, I'm just doing this band, I'm going to break up now.
00:54It's not personal, it's a business.
00:55If Yes hadn't established ourselves by the Yes album, we may have been dropped.
01:01Yes was five individuals were brought together because they shared a common interest in the
01:06movement of music.
01:08I thought Yes was going to be a jazz group.
01:09Turned out to be a rock group, that's fine by me.
01:13The music itself was a little bit more esoteric.
01:17Right from day one, people were amazed at the music.
01:19They were accepted by the college audiences very quickly because they were fresh and
01:24different.
01:25And they were like 18 albums, I'll have them for 18 albums.
01:28You want us for 18 albums?
01:31America?
01:32Wow, I'm going to go to America?
01:33Yeah, but can we play the Spectrum in Philly?
01:35Yeah.
01:36What, Madison Square Garden?
01:38Yes.
01:38You're joking.
01:40Yes created their own identity.
01:42It was very English, but the American people got off it.
01:45I mean, there were four nights in Madison Square Garden, sold out, and Rick and John were left.
01:50Everyone's tired of the beat, man.
01:52It happens every 10 years.
01:54The band should have stopped, but I guess they've got to make a living.
01:5744 shows, with just the odd night off, you start to get worn out.
02:01I just want to show up.
02:02Rick Whiteburton!
02:10I was doing really, really well as a record producer.
02:13So much so that everyone thought I was mad to go and do Yes.
02:17Yes became one of the early dinosaurs, as far as the press were concerned.
02:22We never went glam, put makeup on, go out and play a pop song.
02:26We could have had studio musicians doing that, but it was not Yes.
02:29If that hadn't have happened, there wouldn't be a Yes today.
02:33Doing an incredible commercial, number one around the world.
02:36It's wonderful, but it's fun.
02:38I thought they'd all gone mad.
02:39I thought the mushrooms had got to them.
02:42One is aware of the pitfalls and how to do things better than one's done them before
02:46in order to maintain health and sanity.
02:49If you have a knowledge of music and you have the ability,
02:53you really have to keep all your options open.
02:56There is something special still to happen.
02:59It's been an incredible journey, and the music still stands.
03:03I'll be there with you.
