01:36one has one job, and once you know the jobs, the wiring makes sense instead of being a mystery.
01:42The panel catches the sun and makes electricity. That is its only job. But the electricity it
01:49makes is uneven, strong in bright sun, weak in cloud, changing all day long. That uneven
01:56power is not fit to feed straight into a battery. It would harm it. So the charge controller is
02:02the second piece. It is a small box that sits between the panel and the battery, and its job
02:08is to take that uneven power from the panel and tame it. Turn it into the steady, correct
02:13flow the battery can safely drink. Think of it as the steady hand on the tap. Never, ever
02:20wire a panel straight to a battery without it. That is the first rule. The battery is the third
02:25piece, and it is the true heart of the whole thing. The battery is where the sun gets stored.
02:31Here is a thing most folks get backwards. When you run something off solar, you are really
02:36running it off the battery. The panel's job is just to keep the battery filled. The battery
02:42does the actual work, day and night, sun or no sun. The panel is the helper. The battery
02:49is the heart. And the fourth piece, the one we are adding today, is the inverter. The battery
02:55holds its power in one form, what they call direct current, DC, the same kind that is in a
03:01buggy battery or a car battery. But the things in your house, a normal lamp, a fan, a freezer,
03:07run on the other kind, the kind that comes from a wall socket, alternating current, AC. The
03:14inverter is the box that changes the battery's DC power into the household AC power your appliance
03:20needs. Small inverter, a few dollars, and now you can plug in a normal thing. Panel catches
03:27it. Controller tames it. Battery stores it. Inverter changes it for the house. Four pieces,
03:34four jobs. Hold those in your mind and the rest is just connecting them in the right order.
03:39Now before we touch a single wire, let me lay out the two safety things you need beside those
03:44four pieces, because I will not show you a hookup without them. The first is fuses. A fuse is a
03:51little safety link, a cheap part that sits in the wire and is built to burn out and break the
03:56circuit if too much electricity ever tries to rush through, like in a short circuit. Without a fuse,
04:03a short can melt your wires, ruin your costly battery, or start a fire. With a fuse, the fuse
04:10quietly dies instead, and you just replace a one dollar part. You want a fuse on the line between
04:16the battery and the charge controller, and another on the line between the battery and the inverter.
04:21The battery is where the great push of power lives, so you guard every wire that leaves it.
04:27The second is a switch, an off switch on the lines, so you can shut the power off when you
04:33need to work
04:34on it or in an emergency. Simple and worth having. And here is the one warning I want burned into
04:41your
04:42mind before you start. Never let anything metal touch across the two battery terminals at once.
04:49Not a wrench, not a wire, not a screwdriver, not your ring. The positive post and the negative post.
04:58If you bridge them with anything metal, you get a violent spark, a dead short, and you can hurt
05:04yourself badly and ruin the battery in an instant. So, take off your rings and watch before you work
05:12near a battery. When you use a wrench on one terminal, be careful the other end of that wrench
05:18does not swing over and touch the other post. Work one terminal at a time, mindful, unhurried. That
05:27single habit keeps you safe. Now, here is the heart of the whole lesson, the thing the fellow who taught
05:34me hammered on, the thing almost nobody tells beginners. The order you connect things in matters,
05:41and you always start with the battery and the charge controller, not the panel. Let me say why,
05:49because once you understand it, you will never forget it. The charge controller is a little thinking
05:55box. When you first power it up, it looks at the battery to learn what kind of battery it is
06:01dealing
06:02with, how much power it holds, what it needs. So, it must meet the battery first before anything else
06:10so it can set itself right. If you hook the panel up first, the controller gets a wild jolt of
06:17sun power
06:18before it has met the battery, and it can confuse it or harm it. So, the order every time is
06:25this.
06:25Battery to charge controller first, then panel to charge controller, then the load, the inverter, last.
06:35And when you take it all apart, you go in reverse. Unplug the load, then the panel, then the battery,
06:44last.
06:45Build from the battery out, tear down from the load back. Remember that and you are halfway to doing this
06:53right.
06:53So, let us walk through it, slow, in that order.
06:58Step 1. Battery to charge controller.
07:02Take two wires. There will be a positive, usually red, and a negative, usually black.
07:09Look at your charge controller and you will see it kindly has a little picture of a battery printed right
07:15on it,
07:16marking the two battery terminals, a positive and a negative.
07:20The makers did that on purpose to help you.
07:24You connect the battery's positive to the controller's positive, the one by the battery picture,
07:29and the battery's negative to the controller's negative.
07:33Positive to positive, negative to negative, always, every connection in this whole system, like to like.
07:42And here is where your fuse goes.
07:45On that positive wire, between the battery and the controller, you put your fuse, close to the battery.
07:52Some folks use a little fuse that clips right onto the battery post and gives you a new place to
07:57connect to, handy and tidy.
08:00When you make that last connection and the controller meets the battery,
08:04the little screen or light on the controller will wake up and show you the battery's voltage, something like 12
08:11or 13.
08:12That is the controller saying,
08:14I see the battery, I know what I am working with.
08:18Good. The heart is connected to its steady hand.
08:23Step 2. Panel to charge controller.
08:26Now, and only now, the panel.
08:29The controller will have another spot marked with a little picture of a sun or a panel.
08:34That is where the panel's two wires go.
08:37Same rule.
08:39Positive to positive, negative to negative.
08:42The panel's wires usually end in a particular weatherproof plug they call an MC4 connector.
08:49A male and a female that only go together one way,
08:53so you cannot easily cross them up, which is a mercy.
08:57You may need a short adapter wire that has that plug on one end
09:01and a bare wire on the other to go into the controller.
09:04They sell those ready-made.
09:07Get the ready-made ones to start.
09:09Now, here is a careful word,
09:10because the source I learned the safe way from is right about this.
09:15A panel sitting in bright sun is live.
09:18It is making power the moment light hits it.
09:21So, when you connect the panel,
09:23it is wise to either do it in low light
09:26or cover the panel with a cloth or a board while you make the connection,
09:30so it is not pushing power while your hands are at the wires.
09:34Some put a switch on the panel line so they can connect it switched off and then flip it on.
09:40Once the panel is connected and live,
09:44you will see on the controller's screen a little arrow showing power flowing from the sun into the battery.
09:51That arrow lighting up is the whole thing working,
09:55the sun filling the heart.
09:57Step 3.
09:59The inverter, and this one is different, so listen close.
10:03Here is the part people get wrong,
10:05and getting it wrong can ruin an inverter.
10:08The inverter does not connect to the charge controller.
10:12The inverter connects straight to the battery.
10:15Why?
10:16Because when you switch on a real appliance,
10:19a freezer, a pump, anything with a motor,
10:22it gives a big, hard pull of power in the first instant it starts.
10:27A surge.
10:28That surge is more than the little charge controller can pass through.
10:33But a battery, the heart, has the muscle to give that surge easily.
10:38So the inverter draws straight from the battery where the muscle is,
10:42not through the controller.
10:44So you run a good, thick pair of wires,
10:47and they must be thick because the inverter pulls hard,
10:51from the battery's positive and negative straight to the inverter's positive and negative.
10:57Positive to positive, negative to negative, same as always.
11:01And on that positive wire, close to the battery, another fuse,
11:05because again, any wire leaving the battery gets a fuse.
11:09Keep these inverter wires short and thick.
11:13That is where the most power flows in the whole system.
11:18Now you plug your appliance into the inverter, just like plugging into a wall,
11:23and it runs, off the battery, that the panel keeps full, that the sun fills for free.
11:29That is the whole hookup.
11:31Battery to controller, panel to controller, inverter to battery, fuse on every line off the battery,
11:40a switch to shut it down, and never bridge the battery posts.
11:45An afternoon's careful work.
11:48Now, I owe you some honest words about doing this right,
11:52because a hookup that works and a hookup that is safe and lasts are not always the same,
11:58and I will not show you only the easy half.
12:02First, on wire size.
12:04The wires must be thick enough for the power they carry,
12:08especially the battery-to-inverter wires, which carry the most.
12:12A wire too thin for its load gets hot,
12:15and hot wires are how fires start.
12:18The instructions with your parts, or a simple wire size chart,
12:23will tell you the right thickness for your length and load.
12:27Do not guess thin to save a few pennies.
12:30This is one place to be generous.
12:34Second, on matching the parts to each other.
12:37Look on the back of your panel for the little plate of numbers,
12:40its voltage, and its amperage.
12:42Make sure those do not exceed what your charge controller is built to take in.
12:49And make sure your controller does not push more into the battery
12:53than the battery is rated to take.
12:56For a small starter system with a small panel and a good battery,
13:00this usually takes care of itself.
13:02But for anything bigger, you check the numbers.
13:05They are easy to find, printed right on each part.
13:10Third, on the inverter's size.
13:12A small inverter runs small things.
13:16Lights, a fan, charging tools.
13:19To run a freezer, or anything with a motor,
13:22the inverter must be rated big enough,
13:25not just for the appliance's normal draw,
13:27but for that startup surge I mentioned.
13:30Read the appliance's needs,
13:32and get an inverter with room to spare.
13:35An inverter too small will strain and quit.
13:39And fourth, the honest limit I always give you.
13:43This kind of simple setup runs specific things.
13:48Lights, a freezer, a pump, tools, charging.
13:52It is not for making heat or running an air conditioner.
13:56Those eat far more power than a modest setup can give,
14:00as I have told you before.
14:02Know what it is for, build it for that,
14:04and it will serve you faithfully for years.
14:08If you are ever unsure, and there is no shame in it,
14:12there are folks who do this for a living,
14:14and an hour of a knowledgeable person
14:16looking over your plan is cheap insurance.
14:19I would rather tell you to ask
14:22than have you guess on something that can burn.
14:26Now I want to take a moment,
14:28because this is the part that matters,
14:30and it is bigger than wires.
14:32There is a reason they make this sound complicated.
14:36There is a reason the words pile up,
14:39charge controller, inverter, voltage, amperage,
14:44alternating current,
14:45until a plain person feels it is beyond him
14:49and he had better hire it all out
14:51or just stay on the grid where someone else handles it.
14:55But you have just seen the truth.
14:58It is four boxes and a handful of wires
15:01connected like to like in a simple order.
15:05A careful person can understand the whole of it
15:09in an afternoon.
15:10There is no magic in it,
15:12and there is no priesthood
15:14that alone is allowed to touch it.
15:17That confusion is not an accident,
15:19and it is not quite a conspiracy either.
15:22It is just that there is no money
15:25in telling a man he can do a thing himself.
15:28There is money in the monthly bill,
15:31money in the costly installation,
15:34money in keeping you feeling
15:36that power is a mystery
15:37only the experts may handle.
15:40The moment you understand these four boxes,
15:44you stop being a customer
15:46who must pay whatever is asked
15:48and become a man who can build
15:50and fix his own light.
15:52That is a kind of freedom,
15:54and freedom has never been good
15:56for someone's monthly billing.

16:49battery, controller, panel,
16:51and get that working and charging
16:54before you ever add the inverter.
16:57Hook the battery to the controller.
17:00Watch the screen wake up.
17:02Add the panel.
