The Siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) is the largest of all gibbons and lives in the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. It is best known for its enormous inflatable throat sac, which amplifies its powerful calls. These booming duets, performed by mated pairs, can be heard up to 3 kilometers (2 miles) away and help defend their territory.
Unlike monkeys, siamangs are apes and have no tail. Their exceptionally long arms allow them to swing effortlessly through the forest canopy, reaching speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph) as they move from tree to tree. They feed mainly on fruit, along with leaves, flowers, and occasional insects.
