04:34them a deep, almost spiritual understanding of the desert. They knew how to read the landscape,
04:39where to find shelter, and most importantly, where to find water. They chose Petra, not despite its
04:44challenges, but because of them. The Maze of Canyons was a natural fortress, a perfect,
04:49defensible capital for a kingdom that was getting rich by controlling the spice trade. Frankincense,
04:53myrrh, silks, it all passed through Nabataean hands, and Petra was the center of it all.
04:58They saw their city as the most exclusive and magnificent rest stop in the ancient world.
05:03And to show off their power and impress the traders passing through, they needed to create an oasis,
05:09a statement. They had to prove they hadn't just survived the desert, they had bent it to their will.

06:26amount of water to seep through, preventing the buildup of the immense pressure that could have

08:42huge pear-shaped cisterns directly into the sandstone, hiding them under homes and plazas. Many were massive,
08:49capable of holding tens of thousands of gallons, and they were sealed with a special waterproof plaster.
08:55This wasn't just one big system. It was a decentralized grid. By placing cisterns all over
09:00the city, they made sure every neighborhood had its own local water supply. If a main aqueduct broke,
09:06the city could survive on its local stores. This redundancy was the key to their resilience.
09:10It was a failsafe against both accidents and attacks. And within this network was technology that
09:16still amazes archaeologists. Along the walls of the Secu, you can still see channels where they laid
09:22terracotta pipes. But the Nabataeans weren't just laying pipes, they were masters of pressure. They
09:28knew that sending water down a steep canyon would create too much pressure and burst the pipes. So
09:33they engineered the channels with a very precise, gentle slope. This allowed the water to flow at a
09:39steady speed without filling the whole pipe, leaving air at the top. This dramatically reduced the
09:45pressure, prevented leaks, and ensured a constant, reliable supply. They even built small basins along
09:51the way that acted as filters, letting sand and grit settle to the bottom before the cleaner water flowed on.
09:57All told, this complex system was able to collect and store a massive amount of water estimated to be
10:03over 10 million gallons for the entire city. In a place that got almost no rain, the Nabataeans had

10:33water was piped directly to residential areas, ensuring public health. But the Nabataeans didn't stop at just
10:39survival. Water was also a symbol of their wealth and power. It was liquid propaganda.
