00:00First of all, I want to congratulate you on your Emmy nomination for King of the Hill for this
00:04past season. How are you feeling? Pinching myself. It's an amazing feeling to be nominated for
00:12something, you know? I think even more than winning, you really, it's something, you know,
00:20being recognized by your peers. It just feels really good. And to have been doing this show,
00:27you know, essentially, you know, I mean, Mike and Greg created Bobby, but creating Bobby
00:36throughout the years, it's been the, like my favorite, like the joy of my professional life.
00:43You know, I went through all three of my pregnancies during the show while I was being a 12 year
00:50old
00:50boy. And then 15 years later, you know, we're doing the show again. And it's kind of, it's very
01:00much a pinch me moment. Completely. And how did you get to speak with any of your co-stars? Have
01:06they been in touch since the Emmy nominations came out? I've been hanging out with Stephen Root,
01:12who is like my, my show husband, best friend, brother. And, you know, it was incredible because
01:23we got to see each other the day that he was nominated for Widow's Bay and I was nominated
01:29for King of the Hill. So it was very, very cool. I can't wait to get into some of my
01:33favorite Bobby
01:34moments from this past season. One of them was him serenading Connie with the song,
01:40it's Connie's birthday to the tune of, I want it that way. Connie is my fire. My one desire.
01:51Believe when I say that it's Connie's birthday. Oh my God. Thank you. I remember this. I remember
02:04doing that at the table read. Yeah. How'd that turn out? Absolutely hilarious. Oh,
02:10so cool. But I have to ask, like, as a voice actor, especially, you know, going into Bobby's
02:15voice as this 21 year old male character, is it difficult to switch over to kind of like a sing
02:21songy kind of voice? Like, do you have to do anything, I guess, to get into this kind of bit?
02:27Not at all. It just lives inside me. I don't know. I guess when you are doing, I kind of
02:35made a rule
02:36that, you know, when I started doing animation a long time ago, you can't get locked into a voice
02:43that you can't sustain for a four hour session. And so, you know, anything that you do, you want to
02:53keep juggling. You don't want any balls to drop. But Bobby's balls did drop. How did I do that?
03:00That was great. I didn't even plan it. It's crazy. Yeah, that was awesome.
03:07Another of my favorite Bobby moments is his audition for this reality cooking competition
03:13series, King of the Grill, which incredible meta name in there. And he's trying to find his own
03:19slogan and trying to use all these different, like, you know. Catchphrase. Yes, exactly. Do you ever
03:26get to help with some of these, like, lines and dialogue when it comes to these kinds of bits?
03:30Or are these kind of already laid out for you in the scripts? Yeah, they, I mean, the writers are
03:37so
03:37good. They are just, I mean, notoriously throughout the years have been absolutely incredible. And
03:45I learned so much about writing from being on King of the Hill and learning about, you know, where to
03:57put
03:57air in a show, where to let things, you know, lie. And so this season, these new seasons, we have
04:07a lot
04:07of younger writers. And then we've got some of the old guard in there. And I feel like they've struck
04:15the perfect chord between the vintage storytelling, the characters, the dialogue. And it really feels
04:26organic to the origin show. And it's not like some weird, you know, grotesque, exquisite corpse of a
04:36show that used to be. It's all really working. And I think that we were all very mindful of that.
04:43So I
04:43think that in terms of the contribution that we as actors make, we are, you know, we hold the wall,
04:52you know, and then we just try to make it all work. And it all works together.
04:58Definitely. And you were talking about how it still kind of strikes this vintage chord while also
05:03speaking to the now. And Toby Huss was here last week to talk about King of the Hill. And we
05:08were
05:08talking about how something so successful in this revival is how the show has aged up its characters.
05:14And like that doesn't always work for every single show or for every animated comedy, but for King of
05:19the Hill, it works so well. And in the last episode, there's kind of like a flashback scene where we
05:26see
05:26Bobby with blue hair. He gets a job at Whataburger. And it's kind of him finding his passion for
05:32the restaurant industry. And it's cool to see this period between the original run and the revival.
05:36I love that. I haven't seen that animated yet. Yeah. Oh my God. And so seeing it between,
05:42I guess that period between the original run and the revival, like, did you feel like you needed
05:46to change anything in your voice to get like a slightly younger Bobby or anything? For me, I was like,
05:53what are we doing? Are we going to, like, is this going to be, you know, before I went in
05:59to do the
06:00reboot? I just was, you know, looking up articles on, you know, uh, men whose voices never change.
06:10And I was like, uh, this is a real thing. Um, and you know, there's a lot of people I
06:17know who like
06:18still have the same youthful cadence, but there's just kind of a, a, a nuance and a shift. And finally,
06:29at the end of the day, I had to make a choice that would make it make sense for me
06:33as opposed to
06:34thinking, Oh, they're going to age him down and they're going to do it in the studio or something
06:40like that. Like I needed to do it for myself to make the performance work. And, um, then, you know,
06:49have at it, whatever happens. So it w it worked out. King of the Hill has already been renewed for
06:55two more seasons. Um, which is amazing. Do you know what the status is, I guess, of season 16?
07:00Have you heard anything about like when you'll get back in the studio? So the one that's airing
07:06today is like season two of the reboot? Yes. Okay. So, um, we're starting at the end of this month,
07:13the next one. Awesome. Yeah. And how long does it typically take to record? I know these seasons
07:18have been around like 10 episodes. How long does it take to typically record a season? Oh, it's not
07:23long, but you know, I, I, I really long for the days when we used to all be in the
07:28same room together.
07:29I mean, when, when Lauren Tom passed out on her stool in the booth and when I was so pregnant
07:37and
07:37I used to be like, I would imitate, you know, like, um, uh, you know, the guy who used to
07:44be,
07:44you know, uncle junior on the Sopranos and I used to be like, I'm in awe of you. My stomach
07:50got so big
07:51and Rich Appel used to die laughing. But, um, yeah, I mean, we now it's, it's pretty much isolated
07:59because everybody's like scattered all over the world, but the table reads are where we are all
08:05together and the magic happens. So, um, yeah, we just, we go in and do an episode and it's probably
08:14like under two hours or something like that. Wow. Yeah. It's crazy how quickly that all comes
08:19together. Yeah. But the animation is where like the real work comes in and the writing before that.
08:25Exactly. And you've done so much incredible voiceover work outside of King of the Hill. You recently
08:30worked on an episode of Mating Season, um, the Netflix series, which comes from the creators
08:36of Big Mouth and which you also guest starred on. Um, and like King of the Hill has a stacked
08:41voice
08:41cast. Um, did you get to record any of the, with any of the Mating Season cast in the studio
08:47or was
08:48it primarily individual? Um, yeah, I think I recorded it on my own, but it's funny because I played Nick
08:55Kroll's mother and that his dirty, like beaver mom or something like, I don't even know what animal I am.
09:03Um,
09:04but, um, yeah, it's funny because I played Nick Kroll's wife in history of the world part two. So, um,
09:13it's so I
09:14got to work with him there. He actually, he had texted me, do you want to play my wife in
09:21this Mel Brooks thing I'm doing? And I
09:23said, and I texted him back, voice or face parts? And he wrote face parts. So it was great to
09:31do a voice
09:32part with Nick, but I've worked with them on Big Mouth, like you said, and those shows are absolutely
09:38brilliant as well. Californication. I know last year on Watch What Happens Live, you were asked if there
09:44would ever be a reboot or if you'd ever have any interest in that. Is there any interest on your
09:49end
09:49or has there been any talk of it since then? You know, um, I actually heard that, um, I, I
09:57mean,
09:58I don't care if I get in trouble for this, but that, that Tom Caponos wrote an amazing script for
10:04a
10:04reboot for Californication and that everybody really loved it, but I don't think there's showtime anymore.
10:11So if anybody wants to buy a reboot of Californication, I think that we would all be down.
