00:00It is hard to prepare for death threats. It is hard to prepare for getting a phone call from a
00:08district attorney telling you that someone from another state is going to be charged
00:12for what they have said and hope to do about you. And I've also known for quite some time
00:21that when you are willing to speak up for all people, there are consequences that come from it.
00:29And it's obviously at a different scale. Once I started running for mayor, once I won the nomination
00:34and then the general election, and now that I sit in front of you as the mayor, but even when
00:39I was
00:39an assembly member, and I would speak about how it's unacceptable that we're sending billions of
00:46dollars to kill innocent Palestinians, I would receive voicemails that threatened many of the
00:52same things. And the intent of those messages is to repress that belief in a universality. And that's
01:05something that I will never let go. And I've come to accept it as part of the work that I
01:11do. What
01:12will always be very difficult to accept is what it means for the people that I love.
