Energy and fertiliser crisis due to war will continue to drive up food inflation, UN says

Rising energy and fertiliser prices are likely to continue contributing to food inflation globally, the UN warned in its latest report. This in turn can drive up the cost of a healthy diet and threaten progress against global hunger.

00:00Rising energy and fertilizer prices are likely to continue contributing to global food inflation,
00:06the United Nations warned in its latest report threatening progress against global hunger.
00:11According to the food security report, global hunger has eased modestly, but more than 500
00:16million people could still face chronic hunger by 2030.
00:20International Fund for Agricultural Development President Alvaro Lario warned that geopolitical
00:25tensions and potential shipping disruptions, including surrounding the Strait of Hormuz
00:29during the Iran War, could leave an additional 9 to 18 million people facing hunger.
00:34Ongoing conflicts, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, remain the biggest drivers of higher
00:39energy and input prices, hitting small-scale farms relying on diesel fuel.
00:44This comes as the average global cost of a healthy diet jumped to 4.28 purchasing power
00:49parity dollars per day, up from 3.44 in 2021.
00:54Roughly a third of the global population cannot afford a healthy diet.
00:58With the share rising to 77% in low-income countries.
01:03With Africa emerging as the epicenter, the continent has overtaken Asia as the region with
01:08the largest number of hungry people, where nearly 60% of the world's undernourished could
01:13live by 2030.
01:15Food and Agricultural Organization Director General Kyu Dongyu stressed that ending hunger
01:20requires political commitment and sustained investment to strengthen agri-food systems against
01:25the world's ongoing crisis.
