Nine Chinese nationals, aged 22 to 34, claimed trial on Tuesday (July 21) to a charge of criminal conspiracy linked to a love scam allegedly carried out at a condominium in Bayan Lepas on July 1.

They face charges under the Penal Code for cheating and criminal conspiracy, which carry up to 10 years' jail, caning and a fine.

00:05linked to a love scam. The nine, aged between 22 and 34, had the charge read to them in
00:11Mandarin before Magistrate Chia Hui Ting. They are accused of conspiring together to deceive
00:17victims in a love scam at a condominium in Paziaran Masuri, Sungai Nibong Kecil, on July 1.
00:23They face charges under Section 420 for cheating and Section 120 subsection B1 for criminal
00:31conspiracy, offences that carry between one and ten years jail, caning and a possible fine
00:36if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Iqmal Effendi Zulkifli requested bail to be fixed at
00:4310,000 ringgit each with two sureties. He also requested that they report to a police station
00:49once a month and surrender their passports to the court pending disposal of the case.
00:54Defence lawyer Ahmad Luthfila Hadi Ahmad, representing all nine, appealed for lower bail.
01:00He said his clients entered Malaysia as tourists and all of them have jobs back in China and
01:06earn between around 1,800 ringgit to 3,000 ringgit a month. Magistrate Chia set bail at
01:138,000 ringgit with two sureties each. All nine were ordered to surrender their passports and report
01:20weekly to the Sungai Nibong police station until the case is settled. Documents are due to be
01:25submitted on August 27th. All nine posted bail.
