What was the Tom Cruise stunt that almost went to far? Ahead of the Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One Australian premiere, we sat down with stars Simon Pegg and Pom Klementieff to talk training, new cast members and the ageless wonder that is Tom Cruise. In this chat, Pegg, who plays fan favourite Benji Dunn, and franchise newcomer Klementieff, discuss the challenges of filming the world’s biggest action blockbuster at the height of COVID.

00:07seven movies in Mission Impossible just keeps getting better what is it about
00:11these films that continues to endure I think just because I mean particularly
00:15lately Tom and McHugh have just established this amazing creative
00:19partnership and they just keep pushing each other you know initially it was a
00:22film series about different directors and eclectic series of one-offs and now
00:26it's like this continuing story which just gets stronger and more sort of
00:31accomplished with age it is one of those movies and franchises that continues to
00:36evolve with the times and even in this movie the villain is kind of a sentient
00:39AI not to get too philosophical but do you think there's anything we can learn
00:43from dead reckoning about the dangers of AI maybe how to fight it it depends where
00:48its source code is I suppose but I think yeah AI is definitely a bit of a it's on
00:53our minds isn't it yeah it's scary scares me but at the moment it's just an
00:59aggregator of stuff you know it's not as clever as everyone thinks it is maybe
01:02I mean this is your fifth film in Mission Impossible franchise yeah what made Dead
01:06Reckoning different from ones you've done in the past
01:11you know everything was different this one was particularly different just
01:16because we took on a whole new group of actors like a bulletproof new bulletproof
01:21cast which were made amazing people to work with also we shot it at a very you
01:26know trying time it was through 2020 stay in the bubble and travel to all
01:30these different locations as you know it's like almost like a school trip yeah
01:33the whole thing so it felt different all the way it took longer it was a more of a
01:39challenge you know but in that I think we all rose to it and it kind of that's
01:42reflected in the movie you mentioned it there but obviously there is a lot of new
01:45cast members some fantastic ones probably one of my favorite parts of this whole
01:48movie thank you your character is an absolute weapon what kind of training
01:52did you do for this role so I did a lot of training with Wade Eastwood who's the
01:57stunt coordinator for this movie he worked on the previous movies he's amazing I
02:01had to do some you know fight training so I did some sorts of trainings you know to
02:08find the the fight style of the character at some point I did some katana
02:11training sword training kicking punching and there's like some stuff that you
02:15just you just do it by just doing it you train for everything you have to be
02:19ready you know and then you just do it and right before the take I would sing
02:23do do do do do action and then just run and jump between carriages you know as
02:30you do as you do as one does you have to do it now there is one one fight scene
02:33that I really enjoyed of yours where you and another henchman kind of have Tom
02:36Cruise cornered in an alleyway yeah and it was very reminiscent to me of a movie
02:40that you've been in past in old boy with the corridor scene in your kind of mind
02:44what's what makes the anatomy of a great fight scene I mean you know it's it's
02:50what I learned really with a McHugh and Tom you know it's all about character and
02:55it's all about what the audience is gonna feel and about the the connection and
02:59like sometimes you know it's not about the justified choreo and some cool
03:03movements you know sometimes what is important is like when when the actors are
03:07exhausted one is on the floor one is you know walking dangerously towards the
03:14other is like all these bits you know that touch you you know now I have to ask
03:19Tom Cruise is he contractually obligated to wear aviator sunglasses or does he just
03:23wear that to prove how much better he looks he looks damn good he looks cruel with these glasses
03:27he's you know he's the he's the don when it comes to aviator wearing that's it and
03:33that's sixty years old you have to be in awe of the guy right he's sixty yeah as far as
03:38my research
03:38tells me so when we went to his birthday party last year he said he was forty but what's it
03:44like to
03:45work with him as a as an actor and as a filmmaker oh it's a ride you know it's that
03:49you're getting to
03:49work with probably the last great movie star of his kind you know there is no one else like him
03:55and
03:55and uh it's it's you just count yourself lucky you're there for you know you strap in you climb on
04:02not on him obviously that would be weird strapping on him um no he's um he's so inspiring you know
04:09and
04:09he's very generous and very supportive and he wants every other character to shine in the movie you
04:14know so he's um he's amazing question for you both what's your favorite mission impossible stunt
04:20stunt i mean it's got to be the motorcycle off the cliff for me and this one just because it
04:25was
04:25such an incredible thing to behold i mean i've been there for quite a few of his big stunts over
04:29the years but this one we were both there weren't we yeah it was beautiful yeah it was incredible i
04:34mean just terrifying you know for us as well as him but just it's hard to put it into words
04:41we were
04:41there watching it and he'd go off the end and disappear and then just be silence for like maybe
04:46five seconds and we'd just be waiting to hear whether or not his shoe had opened not that that
04:50was the end of the danger because he could still be pulled into the mountain at that point but
04:53when we got the good canopy yeah it was like oh my god but also in the movie it's shot
04:58in a way that
04:59you just like you hold your breath and with the music and you're like oh what's gonna happen you feel
05:03the air on your skin almost you know he delivers a line in free fall yeah the the the way
05:08that they
05:09shot that i mean you know obviously he was falling with a with another accomplished space jumper
05:13and the fact that he delivers a line not only a line but quite a funny line whilst in free
05:18fall
05:19who else does that nobody amazing well pump simon thank you so much for the time the movie's great
05:24thanks until next time abiento
