00:00There is a huge precedent between China and Disney, and we are not sure that China
00:04would have really spoken.
00:05In 1997, Disney distributed Kundun.
00:08It's a film directed by Scorsese.
00:10It's a film about the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, who is a Tibetan spiritual figure.
00:14We know, we know very well, who the Dalai Lama is.
00:16But there's a huge problem.
00:18For China, Tibet is an extremely political issue.
00:21The Dalai Lama is considered by Beijing to be a separatist figure.
00:26Even before the film's release, China opposed the project.
00:28And Hollywood figures even signed an open letter denouncing the pressure exerted against the film.
00:34But Disney is still releasing Kundun.
00:37And of course, between China and the United States, therefore between Disney and the United States, there is
00:41consequences.
00:42China is threatening Disney's access to its market and the film is banned in China.
00:47Michael Eisner, who was the head of Disney at the time, went to China to apologize.
00:51He reportedly explained that the film had been a mistake and that Disney should avoid this kind of thing in the future.
00:56of problems with his Chinese friends.
00:59And that's why Kundun has become a textbook case.
01:01Because it's not just the story of a film that's banned.
01:04This is one of the moments when Hollywood understands that to access the Chinese market, it is sometimes necessary to avoid certain pitfalls.
01:10topics.
01:10Let me know in the comments if you knew that.
