The match ball from Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England — made famous by the late Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal — is on display at the Fanatics Fest at the Javits Centre in New York.

It is up for auction with a US$2.5mil opening bid, and Heritage Auctions said it could fetch a price comparable to the US$9.2mil paid in 2022 for Maradona’s match-worn shirt from the same game.

At Sotheby's Sports Week event also in New York, a shirt worn by the late Pele in the 1958 World Cup final has been sold for US$4.9mil, making it the most valuable Pele item ever sold at auction.

00:00Are we all pumped?
00:01Yes.
00:03So, I'm going to...
00:04...facaso.
00:05Cómo aprendiste a bloquear?
00:07...eady to play.
00:10We played anywhere.
00:12We played on the street.
00:14We played at school.
00:15...momentos de...
00:17...maxima lección, no?
00:42The hand of God is a moment that even if you know nothing about soccer, you've heard of it.
00:48You know the story.
00:49So, it kind of even just transcends the sport and it's gone into folklore.
00:53And Diego Maradona's the same way, you know.
00:56He was an incredible player, one of the greatest of all time.
00:58A great character.
01:00You know, him naming the hand of God ball is a great plus.
01:04So, it has this great story.
01:06Argentina's had an amazing run.
01:08A lot of dramatic finishes.
01:10They ended up having a rematch with England again.
01:13And once again, breaking England's heart.
01:16And then they're going to end up in the final and have a great chance to win it.
01:20So, everything's going great for the ball.
01:23It kind of parallels the run back then.
01:24There's even been some talk about Argentina getting favorable treatment from the referees.
01:30Which, I don't know if it was favorable treatment for the hand of God or just a missed call.
01:34But a lot of it, that goal and that World Cup run for Argentina has aligned with their run this
01:40year.
01:40There are certainly some great items that have happened.
01:43There'd be some jerseys from Cape Verde's run.
01:46Or some of the underdogs who have made it.
01:50Holland, of course.
01:52You know, material he wore would be special.
01:55And collectors love bookend items.
01:57So, Messi and Ronaldo, their last World Cup, so those would be bookend jerseys from their last game.
02:03But nothing from this World Cup can touch this one.
02:09This is Pele's 1958 World Cup final shirt.
02:15It was the shirt he wore when he really announced himself to the entire world.
02:19It was the first globally broadcast World Cup final.
02:24He was 17 years old.
02:26He scored two goals in this match, beating Sweden and bringing Brazil their very first World Cup title.
02:33He went on to win three more World Cups.
02:36He became the greatest soccer player ever.
02:39And as we know, Brazil has quite the dynasty when it comes to global football.
02:46So, they are considered to be, you know, the greatest powerhouse of soccer anywhere.
02:52Pele was not only a sports icon, he was a global cultural icon.
02:57So, you can see him in Andy Warhol paintings.
03:00Everyone knows the name Pele.
03:02But he also had an incredible impact on how we talk about the game, right?
03:08So, the beautiful game, which is what the sale is named after, was actually sort of revolutionized and popularized because
03:16of Pele.
03:17And then, he also revolutionized things like the bicycle kick, right?
03:21Before Pele played, the bicycle kick wasn't really common nomenclature in soccer.
03:26And now, we know the bicycle kick because of what Pele did on the field.
03:31You got it, you got it, it was way better.
