00:01Meet the robot clothes that dress you.
00:04It's an idea that came to researcher Kim Nam-gyun as he was riding a bicycle and it started to
00:09rain.
00:11Since I was in a situation where I couldn't use both hands,
00:14I thought it would be helpful if a raincoat could be put on automatically.
00:18Kim is among researchers at South Korea's Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
00:23and Stanford University who have developed clothing that puts itself on.
00:27They develop technology that uses soft and flexible air-powered vines which are embedded in clothing.
00:33When pressurized, the vines glide the fabric up over the wearer's body.
00:38A vine robot has inherent compliance.
00:41It has the advantage of being able to grow while naturally conforming to a person,
00:45much like ivy climbing a wall.
00:48Kim said that while the speed of the dressing process depends on the air pressure,
00:52it takes about 10 seconds for the robot to climb along the shape of the body.
00:57According to the researchers, the technology's potential also lies in the fact
01:01that the wearer does not have to stay motionless while being dressed
01:04and that it works without a complex control algorithm.
01:08Civil and environmental engineering professor Ryu Ji-hwan
01:11explained how the climbing ivy-inspired robot manages this type of movement.
01:18Rather than the robot's entire body moving, it moves as its step grows forward.
01:23And this brings many advantages.
01:25In particular, it can pass through narrow gaps,
01:28grow while adapting to the shape of its surrounding environment,
01:31and move regardless of whether the surface is slippery, sticky or sloped.
01:38Beyond helping elderly and disabled people,
01:41the team believes the technology could be useful
01:43anywhere people need to put on and take off protective clothing quickly
01:47without using their hands.
01:50In the future, it could also be used in workplaces
01:53where people need to put on and take off special clothing quickly,
01:56such as cleanroom suits, protective suits in medical facilities,
02:00or uniforms used on semiconductor production lines.
