Thailand first emerged as the Sukhothai Kingdom after breaking away from the Khmer Empire. It was later absorbed by the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which became one of the most powerful states in mainland Southeast Asia. In 1767, Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese, but Taksin reunified the country and established the Thonburi Kingdom, restoring and expanding Thai influence.

Under the Rattanakosin Kingdom, Thailand reached its greatest territorial extent. However, during the age of European colonialism, France and Britain pressured Thailand into giving up large areas of land, including territories in modern Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

During World War II, Thailand allied with Japan and managed to regain some of its lost territories. After the war, these gains were reversed, leading to the formation of Thailand's modern borders.

Despite losing large amounts of territory over time, Thailand remained the only country in mainland Southeast Asia that was never colonized by a European power.
