00:00The Department of Foreign Affairs criticizes a China state-run publications video depicting Philippine citizens as monkeys.
00:08This comes after China Daily published AI-generated videos and editorial cartoons about the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award.
00:15In a statement, the DFA writes,
00:17As a Chinese state-run media outlet, China Daily's conduct goes beyond legitimate political debate and employs blatantly demeaning, dehumanizing,
00:25and racist depictions of Filipinos.
00:28The DFA adds,
00:29The Philippines has consistently rejected false narratives and distortions regarding the Arbitral Award and the Philippines' slothful positions in the
00:36South China Sea.
00:37But the agency draws, quote,
00:39A firm line at the depiction of Filipinos as monkeys.
00:42A July 10 video released by China Daily centers on a monkey wearing a traditional Filipino salakot and barong, strong
00:49-handed by two arms labeled USA and Japan.
00:52The monkey is tossed out to sea and is hit by water cannons.
00:55The DFA says,
00:57Disagreement over legal and political issues does not justify resorting to disturbing imagery which has no place in the civil
01:03-public discourse of a responsible state.
01:06Meantime, Philippine legislators publicly criticized the, quote,
01:10racist depiction in the video.
01:12These include ML Rep. Laila de Lima, Senators Robin Padilla, Francis Pangilinan, and Senate President Nguyen Gachalian.
01:19Defense Secretary Gibbo Teodoro also says the video reveals China as neither a secure and confident actor nor a trustworthy
01:26neighbor.
