00:03Our solar system is pretty diverse, but because the planets, moons, and other celestial objects
00:08within it are generally made from whatever was remaining after the sun materialized,
00:12the chemical makeup of the whole system is fairly related in terms of their properties.
00:16But not all star systems are the same, and scientists believe that one with a star high
00:20in carbon could even produce planets made entirely of diamonds. Experts theorize that
00:25if plenty of silicon carbide was oxidized by water present on the planet, turning it
00:29into silicon and carbon, enough heat and atmospheric pressure could create a diamond planet.
00:34To test their theory, researchers did exactly that. First oxidizing silicon carbide with water,
00:38then the resulting silicon and carbon were placed under 50 gigapascals of pressure,
00:43or about half a million times the pressure in Earth's atmosphere at sea level, and then heated it,
00:47resulting in diamonds and confirming their theory. But while finding a planet made of diamonds might
00:52sound nice, this research will actually help astronomers rule out certain planets in humanity's
00:57constant search for life in the universe.
