Wildfire smoke: How to protect yourself when air quality worsens

Health experts are urging people to take precautions as wildfire smoke from Canada blankets New York City. They recommend limiting time outdoors, wearing a properly fitted N95 mask when necessary, keeping windows closed and using HEPA air purifiers to reduce exposure.

00:14But what we're most concerned about is the breathing complications that can happen from
00:19breathing in this polluted air. Because basically one of the particles of wildfire smoke is fine
00:24particulate matter. So when you breathe this in, this can go into the lungs and cause inflammation
00:29and so for anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, this increases the risk of an
00:34asthma exacerbation.
00:55If you do have to be outdoors, you want to wear a mask that's going to filter out as many
01:00air pollutants as possible.
01:01So this includes what we call an N95 mask. And the 95 basically means that it filters out about 95
01:08% of air pollutants.
