A new Pew Research Center survey has found that, for the first time, people in more countries hold a more favorable view of China than of the United States. What is driving this shift in global opinion, and what does it mean for the changing balance of international influence?
Professor Grzegorz Kołodko, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Poland and renowned economist, spoke to CGTN Europe. He explained how China’s economic achievements, long-term policy planning and expanding global engagement are reshaping international perceptions, while arguing that growing uncertainty over U.S. policy is eroding Washington’s global standing.

00:00Gregor Skolotko is the former Deputy Prime Minister of Poland.
00:04The public opinion all over the world towards China, as well as vis-à-vis very many other issues, is
00:13moving, is changing.
00:15And in this very case, there is more positive view on China, and along with the rising soft and hard
00:25power of China,
00:26it is important for the geopolitical shift. I do pay attention to what people think.
00:32Sometimes it is even much more important than what the political leaders think and what they say.
00:38So it is very important, and there are some news in this recent survey.
00:44Why are ordinary people's views changing?
00:49For a number of reasons. One reason is that more people do travel to China.
00:54Say, 10 or 25 years, only a few of us from other countries were able to visit China.
01:02Now it goes in millions, and whoever goes to China, I do travel pretty often in different capacities,
01:09as an individual or in my scholar capacities.
01:12Whoever goes to China is impressed, is impressed by the culture of Chinese people,
01:19by the sympathetic to the foreigners, and first of all, by the development, by how far China is progressing.
01:29Is this the story of China rising versus America falling?
01:36Of course, of course, because it goes in parallel.
01:41It is not zero-sum game, but indeed, the more support, the more appreciation,
01:47the more admiration to China, at the same time, less to the United States.
01:52So one driving force is that people all over the world, they understand China better.
01:58They share some of the Chinese values.
02:01They are trying to get the message from China remarkable, remarkable on social and economic development.
02:09The United States was much more predictable, accountable under the Biden administration
02:14and earlier during eight years of President Obama.
02:17Obama in the White House now.
02:20We don't know what Mr. Trump will say, not even in a week, even the same day.
02:27One day he says that he is imposing 20% tariffs or tax on ships cruising through Armos Straits.
02:36At the same day, he is changing his mind.
02:39If he was not the president of the United States, there would be much stronger words than just weird.
02:46It is unaccountable.
02:48It is irresponsible.
02:49And for that reason, much more risk is if one puts trust in the United States.
