IIT Kanpur's advanced automobile research laboratories showcased to India Today the ongoing scientific studies on the impact of E20 petrol on vehicle performance. At the institute's automobile laboratory, researchers demonstrated live testing of E20 petrol on a BS6 car engine. The engine was connected to specialised equipment that monitored key performance parameters, including knocking and other engine responses, while simulating different operating conditions affecting mileage and overall performance. Project scientists explained the research methodology, data collection process and analysis of various performance parameters. They also examined engine components as part of the study, stating that carbon deposits were found even in parts that had never been used with E20 petrol, indicating that conventional petrol can also lead to carbon formation. According to the researchers, ethanol-blended fuel resulted in comparatively lower carbon deposits. At IIT Kanpur's two-wheeler testing facility, researchers are also studying the impact of E20 petrol on motorcycles. A motorcycle was tested under varying speed, acceleration, load conditions and riding patterns to replicate real-world usage, while specialised equipment continuously recorded performance data that was monitored from a dedicated control room. Researchers also examined fuel tanks and engine components after E20 petrol usage for signs of damage, abnormal carbon deposits or performance issues. According to the live assessment conducted during the study, they found no adverse impact on the motorcycle engine due to the use of E20 petrol.
