00:20They struck a giant gong during the day, 1 to 6 times to announce the hour.
00:25The ringing echo sounded like mong.
00:27So in daytime hours, we use the unit of time mong, just like saying o'clock.
00:33At night, the instrument changed, they beat a large drum making a deep tum sound.
00:38So tum becomes our unit of time in the night.
00:41After midnight, they hit a middle plate, the Thai word for to strike is ti.
00:47So ti becomes our unit of time at night.
00:50And the afternoon, we just use bai, meaning the sun has declined past noon.
