00:00Australia has launched a new Office of Artificial Intelligence to lead the country's approach to AI policy.
00:07Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the office will help bring AI governance under a single national framework
00:14and strengthen Australia's leadership in the technology.
00:17So it is only natural that up until now our response has been issue by issue, sector by sector.
00:24But just as government developed coordinated approaches for other significant technologies,
00:31from civil aviation in the 1920s to genetics in the 1990s, we must do this with AI as well.
00:40Albanese also rejected the idea of allowing AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic
00:46to freely use Australian content to train their models.
00:49He said writers, artists and musicians should remain in control of their work
00:54and be fairly compensated if it is used, adding that unauthorized use of creative content amounts to theft.
01:02The government also plans to introduce new rules next year,
01:05requiring large AI data centers to meet stricter energy and water efficiency standards.
