00:01Police have arrested 21 Chinese nationals suspected of being involved in a fake investment scheme during a raid on a
00:09two-story bungalow in Aya Kero on Monday.
00:13Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Melaka Tega Acting Police Chief Superintendent Halim Abbas said the suspects, aged between
00:2223 and 54, were arrested during an 8pm raid conducted by the District Commercial Crime Investigation Division.
00:49The syndicate, which allegedly targeted Chinese nationals, is believed to have been promoting fake
00:56stock investment schemes through a website since early July.
01:00Preliminary investigations found that the two-story bungalow was used as the syndicate's call centre and had been operating for
01:07about two weeks.
01:09The suspects are believed to have worked as customer service representatives, tasked with recruiting victims into the fraudulent investment scheme.
01:17Halim said the syndicate's modus operandi involved luring victims with promises of high returns within a short period.
01:25Victims were directed to a website containing information about the purported investments before being contacted by other syndicate members, who
01:34continued the deception until money was transferred.
01:36Police found that none of the suspects had valid identification documents or travel documents, including passports.
01:45During the raid, authorities seized equipment worth about 25,000 ringgit, including eight desktop computers, three laptops, two modems, a
01:55Skyworth router, 14 mobile phones and a USB adapter believed to have been used in the operation.
02:01Halim said police have not ruled out the possibility that the syndicate is linked to other investment scam groups previously
02:09uncovered in Malacca.
