09:03A Portuguese wildlife sanctuary in the southern region of Alentejo has welcomed its first elephant
09:10Julie is Portugal's last wild animal remaining in a Portuguese circus
09:15At the Pangaea elephant sanctuary
09:17She's already walking around in a controlled environment and has even taken her first mud bath
09:23Julie isn't just Pangaea's first elephant
09:25She's also the last circus elephant in Portugal
09:28And in fact the last wild animal in any circus and that's enormous
09:32It just shows how important it is to marry
09:35Legislation with sanctuary as well because you've got to have a solution
09:38You've got to have a place to send these animals
09:40The site is said to be the first of its kind in Europe and aims to give elephants the closest

10:05Conceived as a new home for elephants from zoos and circuses across Europe
10:09Ultimately there hasn't been any solution for any zoos, circuses or governments who are looking for a place to send
10:14elephants in need
10:15And basically that's what we're providing
10:17We're here to work together with those elephant holding facilities and governments to help give elephants a new life
10:23So our experience with Victor Hugo Cardinale has just been incredibly positive
10:28I think as soon as we came to that agreement we were both just so focused on Julie's welfare
10:33And trying to get the best outcome for her
10:35And yeah, so I just think it's a really good foundation to set to show this is how we're going
10:40to work going forward
10:41Julie will not be alone for long
10:43Pangea is already working to receive another elephant from a circus in Belgium
10:47And expects more to follow
10:49With capacity to host between 20 and 30 elephants
10:53Pangea, a UK trust opened the sanctuary with funds from various organizations and donors
