00:00Welcome back to the Betrayal Files. I'm glad you're here.
00:03Around the world, there are stories so unbelievable they sound like fiction.
00:07But every case we open on this channel is based on real events.
00:12So grab a seat and let's open today's file.
00:16She went out for a jog on a Tuesday morning in November 2016. She never came home.
00:21For 22 days, an entire country searched for Sherry Papini.
00:26Her husband was on television begging for her return.
00:30Her community raised thousands of dollars.
00:33The FBI was involved. Volunteers were combing through forests and fields.
00:39And then, on Thanksgiving morning, she appeared on the side of a highway.
00:45Bound, branded, bruised, barely recognizable.
00:49She said two masked Hispanic women had kidnapped her, tortured her, and chained her in a room for three weeks.
00:57America believed her.
00:59And America was wrong.
01:01Because six years later, Sherry Papini stood in a courtroom and admitted the whole thing was a lie.
01:08But here is the part nobody was ready for.
01:11Three years after that confession, she changed her story again.
01:16And this time, she says, she was telling the truth the whole time.
01:21This is one of the most twisted, layered, and genuinely baffling cases in modern American crime history.
01:27And I promise you, by the end of this video, you will not know what to believe.
01:32Let's start from the beginning.
01:34Sherry Papini grew up in Redding, California.
01:38A small city in the northern part of the state.
01:42By 2016, she was 34 years old.
01:46Married to a man named Keith Papini, and they had two young children, a boy named Tyler and a girl
01:54named Violet.
01:55From the outside, they looked like the perfect family.
01:59The kind of family you see in a Christmas card.
02:03Keith worked in tech support.
02:05Sherry stayed home with the kids.
02:07They lived in a quiet neighborhood.
02:09They had a dog.
02:11They had a life that looked completely ordinary.
02:13But something was not right behind that door.
02:16And depending on who you ask, the story of what was wrong is completely different.
02:21On November 2, 2016, Keith Papini came home from work, and Sherry was not there.
02:27The kids were at daycare.
02:29Her phone had been left behind at the house.
02:32She had gone out for a run that morning and simply disappeared.
02:38Keith called the police.
02:39The Shasta County Sheriff's Office launched a search.
02:43Within days, it had become a national story.
02:47A beautiful young mother vanished without a trace in a quiet suburban neighborhood.
02:52The story exploded.
02:55Media trucks camped outside the house.
02:58Keith gave tearful interviews.
03:00Strangers donated money to help fund the search.
03:04The community organized volunteer searches.
03:06And through all of it, Keith Papini was the grieving husband, desperate to find his wife.
03:1222 days later, on Thanksgiving morning, a driver on Interstate 5 spotted a woman on the side of the road.
03:21She was disheveled, disoriented, and she had a chain around her wrists.
03:27Her hair had been cut off.
03:29She had burns and bruises on her body.
03:32She had lost more than 15% of her body weight.
03:35It was Sherry Papini.
03:37She was rushed to a hospital.
03:39And when investigators sat down with her, she told them a detailed and harrowing story.
03:44Two masked Hispanic women had abducted her at gunpoint while she was jogging.
03:48They had driven her away, held her captive, chained her in a bedroom, starved her, tortured her, and branded her
03:58skin with a symbol.
04:00She could not clearly identify them because of their masks, but she described them as Hispanic, speaking Spanish, one older
04:08and one younger.
04:09California law enforcement issued a detailed description of two unknown Hispanic women.
04:15The search for her kidnappers became its own investigation.
04:19For years, authorities followed leads, interviewed witnesses, tested evidence.
04:25For six years, two women nobody could identify were officially suspects in a kidnapping and torture case.
04:34But investigators noticed something strange early on.
04:37The details in Sherry's story kept shifting.
04:40Small things, then bigger things.
04:42The description of the women changed slightly between interviews.
04:47The timeline had gaps that did not add up.
04:50And most importantly, there was DNA.
04:54Shortly after Sherry was found, forensic analysts discovered both male and female DNA on the clothing she was wearing.
05:03Not two women, a man and a woman.
05:07That was the first crack in the wall.
05:09For years, that DNA sat in a database, unmatched.
05:15Then, in 2020, it came back.
05:19The male DNA belonged to a man named James Reyes.
05:23He was not a stranger.
05:24He was Sherry's ex-boyfriend.
05:27Investigators brought Reyes in for questioning, and he did not deny knowing Sherry.
05:32He told them everything.
05:34According to Reyes, Sherry had been in contact with him before she disappeared.
05:39She told him she wanted to run away from her marriage.
05:43She said Keith was abusive, controlling, and she needed to escape.
05:47Reyes said he picked her up on November 2nd in a rental car, using a car leased by a friend
05:54to avoid leaving a paper trail.
05:56He drove her back to his apartment in Costa Mesa in Southern California.
06:01They stayed together for 22 days.
06:04She hid with him.
06:06She used prepaid phones to stay off the grid.
06:09She watched the news coverage of her own disappearance.
06:13She saw her husband on television.
06:16And then, according to Reyes, she told him she missed her kids and wanted to go home.
06:23Reyes drove her back toward Northern California.
06:26Before she got out of the car, she threw her prepaid phone out the window.
06:31He dropped her on the side of the road.
06:33She walked out of the car looking like what she needed to look like for her story to work.
06:38The injuries on her body, the brand, the weight loss, the bruises.
06:44Reyes told investigators she did all of that to herself.
06:48He said it was her idea.
06:50He said he never hurt her.
06:52Reyes was fully cooperative with investigators.
06:55He took a polygraph test and passed.
06:58He was never charged with any crime.
07:00In March 2022, Sherry Papini was arrested.
07:04If you're following this story as closely as I am, hit that subscribe button and leave a like.
07:09It keeps this channel going and helps more people find these cases.
07:13The charges against Sherry were one count of making false statements to a federal agent and one count of mail
07:22fraud.
07:22The mail fraud charge related to the GoFundMe donations and other financial support she had fraudulently received.
07:30The total amount she had to repay was $309,900.
07:35One month after her arrest, Sherry pleaded guilty.
07:39And in September 2022, she stood in that courtroom and said these words.
07:44She said,
07:45I am guilty of lying.
07:47I am guilty of dishonor.
07:49I stand before you willing to accept, to repent, and to concede.
07:54She was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison.
07:58Keith Papini filed for divorce two days after her plea agreement was submitted.
08:04He was granted full custody of their two children.
08:08Sherry was allowed only one supervised hour per month with Tyler and Violet.
08:13She served 11 months of her sentence and was released to a halfway house in August 2023.
08:20By September 29th, 2023, she was out.
08:25Most people thought the story was over.
08:27She had confessed.
08:29She had gone to prison.
08:31The lie was exposed.
08:33But Sherry Papini was not done.
08:35In Tusai 25, she appeared in a four-part investigation discovery documentary series called Sherry Papini, Caught in the Lie.
08:44And in that series, she did something nobody expected.
08:48She took it back.
08:50Sherry Papini told the documentary that her original story was not entirely false.
08:56She now claims that James Reyes did abduct her.
08:59That she went to see him intending to end their long-distance emotional affair.
09:03And that when she tried to leave, he would not let her go.
09:08She describes injuries that she says were not self-inflicted.
09:11She describes being held against her will.
09:14She describes coming forward with a false story about two Hispanic women because she was terrified of Reyes.
09:23Terrified of what Keith would do if he found out about the affair.
09:28And already trapped in a lie she did not know how to get out of.
09:32She said,
09:43She also revealed something else in the documentary.
09:46She told viewers that she had been sexually abused as a child by someone outside her family.
09:53She said that experience shaped the way she responded to danger and conflict by appeasing, by placating, by making herself
10:01smaller to avoid getting hurt.
10:03Her mother appeared in the documentary and seemingly confirmed there had been inappropriate sexual behavior in Sherry's early childhood.
10:12In June 2025, Sherry went even further.
10:18She self-published a book called Sherry Papini Doesn't Exist, in which she lays out her version of events in
10:24full.
10:24She gave an interview to ABC News and appeared on Good Morning America.
10:29She told anchor Juju Chang,
10:31To be clear, there was one thing I lied about.
10:35Everything else was accurate and true.
10:37I lied about the identity of my captor.
10:41Law enforcement did not agree.
10:44The Shasta County Sheriff's Office responded to her new claims with a statement.
10:50They said James Reyes was interviewed extensively by the FBI and their major crimes unit.
10:57They said he was fully cooperative and forthright.
11:01They said he passed a polygraph.
11:03And they stand by the conclusion that Sherry Papini orchestrated the hoax herself.
11:09The FBI declined to comment.
11:13James Reyes has continued to deny that he abducted Sherry Papini.
11:16He has never been charged with any crime.
11:19In May 2025, a Netflix film called Hoax,
11:24The Kidnapping of Sherry Papini was released,
11:27with actress Jaime King portraying Sherry.
11:30The previous year, Hulu released a documentary called Perfect Wife,
11:35The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherry Papini,
11:38in which Keith Papini spoke publicly for the first time about his ex-wife.
11:43Keith told People magazine he does not speak to Sherry outside of court or mediation.
11:49He said she has never personally apologized to him or their children for the lie they all believe for years.
11:56As of early 2026, Sherry Papini is still on supervised release
12:02and still locked in a custody dispute with Keith,
12:05trying to increase the time she spends with her children.
12:09Of the 309, 900 ituls she was ordered to repay,
12:15a significant portion remains outstanding.
12:18Of the 148,860 skeg owed to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office alone,
12:26she has returned just over $9,000.
12:29She says she is also writing two books.
12:32During a supervised visit with her daughter in early 2024,
12:36she told the child,
12:38Mommy is an author now.
12:40She is writing two books.
12:41She works lots of hours.
12:43So here is where we are.
12:45Sherry Papini pleaded guilty in open court.
12:48She said she lied.
12:50She said the kidnapping was fake.
12:52She went to prison.
12:53Then she got out
12:54and said she was telling the truth the whole time.
12:57The man she now accuses passed a polygraph and was never charged.
13:01Law enforcement stands by their original conclusion
13:04and Sherry Papini is selling a book.
13:07Was she a calculated woman
13:09who staged an elaborate hoax
13:11to escape a marriage she was tired of,
13:14then invented a new story
13:16when the old one stopped working for her?
13:19Or was she a deeply traumatized woman
13:23trapped in an abusive situation
13:26who told the wrong lie to cover the right truth
13:29and has been paying for it ever since?
13:32I genuinely do not know.
13:34And I think that is exactly why this case will not go away.
13:38A woman disappears.
13:39A nation searches.
13:41She comes back branded and broken.
13:44She confesses.
13:45She recants.
13:46And somewhere in all of that,
13:48the truth is buried under so many layers of story and survival
13:52and self-preservation
13:54that it may never fully surface.
13:57If you made it to the end of this one,
13:59thank you.
14:00Genuinely.
14:01Drop a comment and tell me what you think.
14:03Did she fake it?
14:04Was she abducted?
14:05Or is the truth somewhere in the middle
14:07that none of us can see from out here?
14:09I read every comment.
14:11Like the video if this case got to you.
14:13Subscribe so you are here for the next one.
14:16And I will see you in the next one.
14:19I love you.
