In the 1950s, American women often seemed to share the same ideals of marriage, motherhood, and homemaking. But depending on where they lived, their daily lives could look dramatically different. A suburban housewife and a city woman might have lived only a few miles apart, yet their routines, opportunities, social circles, and challenges were often worlds apart.
In this video, we explore city vs suburbs: the two different lives of 1950s American women. Discover how suburban women navigated new housing developments, car-dependent lifestyles, neighborhood social networks, and the pressures of the postwar domestic ideal. Meanwhile, many urban women experienced a faster-paced environment with greater access to jobs, public transportation, cultural institutions, and diverse communities.
