A 40-year-old man's death has brought the Kambo ceremony into the spotlight. This report delves into the use of frog poison for detoxing, examining both the anecdotal claims of positive after-effects and the scientific findings that warn of hyperthermia, dangerously low sodium levels, and other potentially fatal conditions.

00:00Last month, a 40-year-old wellness coach, Christian Trend, died after reportedly taking
00:05part in a Cambo cleansing ceremony in Leicester. He's thought to be the first British fatality
00:10linked to Cambo. But there have been at least six deaths associated with Cambo around the world.
00:15So how does it work? The frog secretes Cambo as a defense mechanism to harm predators that try to
00:21attack it. People collect and dry these secretions before releasing the animal back into the wild.
00:26Shamans then use a heated rod to create small burns in the skin and apply Cambo to the burns.
00:33Martin Williams, a research fellow at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, wrote that
00:38this produces an intense purging effect. It usually causes intense nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
00:46But Williams said the great majority of users of Cambo anecdotally report positive physical,
00:51emotional and spiritual after effects. But Cambo can also have more severe health consequences.
00:57A study published last year in the Curious Journal of Medical Science said it can lead to hypothermia
01:03and dangerously low sodium levels, inducing psychiatric effects that are often misinterpreted
01:09by participants as astral travel, instead of being recognized as potentially fatal conditions.
01:15The study authors said that it was concerning that Cambo is so widely available on the internet,
01:20as this could contribute to an uncontrolled increase in fatalities.
01:24So, as we use them to just use some setup to produce the potential for some of these
01:24Bad maceous residents…
