The real Efraim Diveroli declined to meet with Jonah Hill before the filming of War Dogs. Hill later joked, “I’m used to it. If a person is aggressively against me playing them, it’s probably a good sign.” While the film portrays its two young arms dealers as frequently finding themselves in dangerous situations overseas, the real-life story was far less action-driven. Although David Packouz and Diveroli operated in a risky industry, much of their work was conducted behind computer screens rather than on the front lines, making the film’s sense of physical danger a significant dramatic exaggeration.
